The underground caves of Kiev are an exciting part of the cultural and tourism circuit. As a historical landmark, they attract large numbers of tourists as well as religious pilgrims throughout the seasons.

I have occasionally heard some people refer to them as the Orthodox Disneyland. Others consider these caves as the seventh wonder of Ukraine.

Generally, the exploration of these sites requires the services of a professional tour guide. They can provide invaluable information based on both history and architecture. A typical tour to the caves takes about an hour.

Then again, the caves, such as those of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, are tourist-friendly. They come with signs and clear pathways to make the exploration easier for visitors.

Brief Facts About the Underground Caves

There is a rich history behind the caves. This is how it goes. The architectural masterpieces consist of a monastery with underground churches that have been in existence since the 11th century.

The caves are of two distinct types. The Near caves are at the famous site of the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, also known as the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and, associated with St. Antony. The Far Caves, on the other hand, are associated with St. Theodosius.

The earliest of these caves and catacombs were for two primary purposes; as a monastery, and burial places for the monks. Later on, partitions were created to make room for domestic household and religious items.

More passages came into being during the soviet era, and the reason for this was to create a secure way to access certain parts of the city without being noticed.

Some of the grand monuments accompanying these architectural ensembles include the Dormition Cathedral and the Trinity Gate church. Other surface churches are the St. Anthony of the Near Caves and St. Theodosius of the Far Caves.

How to Explore the Underground Caves?

Now, it isn’t very easy to explore these caves on your own, especially if you are a first-time visitor. Therefore, you need a professional tour guide to take you along the underground routes and bring you back to the surface safely.

The good news though, is that since I have been doing this for years, you are definitely in safe hands. I also guide on the type of useful tools to carry along. These include a flashlight and spare clothes to change.

Also, ensure that the clothes are practical enough to allow you to navigate the tunnels. I always recommend comfortable, warm, and even waterproof clothing for this purpose. You might quickly find how cold and wet it can sometimes get, so it’s good to come fully prepared. I would take it applies mostly to the Far caves.

The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, on the other hand, is more visitor-friendly, and you can explore any time of day and irrespective of change in weather. This is because, over the years, there have been infrastructural adjustments to allow for better maneuvering.

What Are the Dos and Don’ts?

The exploration comes with specific dos and don’ts. So here are some of the tips I can provide:

  • This is a religious site, so you need to observe the dress code, especially if you are female.
  • You can wear long skirts, and the best way is to wear them over your regular clothes. The best thing is you can secure one at the entrance if you did not carry yours. You might, of course, be asking why the restriction. Well, it’s mostly as a sign of respect for the holy place.
  • Another vital gear is the headscarf, and you can purchase it from the babushkas hawking them right outside the church. You may need to buy a candle too if yours is a religious tour.
  • But I must also warn you that cameras are not allowed into the place, so in actual sense, you won’t be taking any pictures.
  • The best part of this excursion is that entrance is free.

What to Experience in The Underground Caves?

As already stated, the most famous site is the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. It’s one of the most revered places, seasoned with annual pilgrimages. I would say it remains an active monastery to date, welcoming all kinds of visitors, including non-Christians. The site offers both underground and surface explorations, leaving you with unforgettable experiences.

So what do you expect to see here? Some of the first things you notice are mummified bodies in glass caskets. Creepy, is it? Well, not so much as to say that there is absolute normality. There is a complete air of calm as well.

The biggest surprise, though, is that they are so well-preserved you would think they are of recent times. One of the reasons is that the type of climate and fresh air within the location helps to prevent decomposition.

Then, of course, there are places of worship and living quarters of the monks. You also see numerous relics of religious symbolism.

But the tour is not limited to the underground sanctuaries alone. Above the ground, you can explore such sites as the ruins and remnants of the Dormition Cathedral and the Holy Trinity church.

Other monuments around this spot include the Great Bell Tower and the All Saints church. Again, on the side, is the famous micro museum, which has a collection of awe-inspiring miniatures. You can only see these tiny collections using a microscope.

Conclusion

The underground caves are a distinct and unique landmark drawing thousands of visitors each year. These sacred sites appeal to visitors across the board, offering different perspectives. For example, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra allows you not just the view of the underground, but right above it, you can visit and view various monuments, as well as the magnificent Dnieper river.

The good news is that I can provide you with all the necessary guidelines, show you all the deeper parts of these sites, and so much more. Generally, both the underground and the upper surface of these sites is an experience you would never want to miss in your lifetime.

Should you plan to visit Kiev? Of course, yes, and looking at the numbers, the city ranks among top locations where foreign visitors are trooping each successive year. As a seasoned tour guide, I would say there are so many reasons for this status quo.

Besides its advance in areas such as architecture and history, Kiev is legendary for its top attractions, including significant landmarks. The city home to some of the most beautiful locations and landscapes.

It’s also a bustling marketplace that offers affordable services ranging from transportation, food, and luxury products. Meanwhile, it’s a strategic location in the north, serving as a gateway to the famous city of Chernobyl, also a significant tourist attraction.

Now, let me give an in-depth explanation.

Kiev Is Safe

Kiev is like any other modern city, so you cannot miss a few out of the ordinary elements/incidences. But besides that, it remains one of the safest capitals in the world. Issues of terrorism and unprovoked attacks are rare. According to available statistics, the crime rate is quite low, and you can walk around the streets in the late hours of the night without fear.

Also, unlike in the past years, the highways are so well-lit and less hazardous. The city’s roads are smooth, meaning that driving is safe, comfortable, and less road carnage. Another plus is that the government now disseminates information and travel advice on the current hotspots. This enables every traveler to know which places and situations to avoid.

But again, I would say common sense applies, and personal security takes precedence at all times. Being an international traveler, its possible to stand out. Hence you need to take considerable care not to flash money around while also watching your belongings and wallet. This relates mostly to public transport.

Bustling Market

Again, why is kiev a popular tourist destination? It has been decades since soviet era restrictions got entirely out of the way. Now, tourists have a field day bargain-hunting in a city that is so vibrant and busy round the clock.

Most visitors revel in the classy designer clothes, electricals, and pricey leatherwear. The shopping malls boast of designer male/female attires from all the top brands in the world. And it does not stop there. You have the opportunity to scoop some of the most sought after souvenirs /mementos to carry back home.

What of the outdoor markets? Let me say that these and uncountable shopping malls dot the city. Thus, you have a line-up of locations to pick affordable fresh food, vegetables, and even drinks.

Exciting Nightlife

Another big reason for an increase in visitors is the fantastic nightlife, and this happens more during the summer. For instance, whenever my clients come, I schedule to introduce them to an emerging vibrant youth culture comprising live bands and studio music.

This, in essence, dominates the party and nightlife scene. Many tourists are familiar with locations like Nizhneyurkovskaya Street. Here, famous bars like Mezzonine, Closer, and Otel are popular for good music, and sensational nightlife.

Great Landscape

Most of my visitors have one major confession. They say that Kiev is a perfect location where they quickly discover and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Green leafy views mark the city with a mix of exciting landmarks, which provides a sense of magnificence and glamour.

An example is the landscape alley, a destination for fascinating fairy tales, and beautiful backdrops. The spot, which is open 24/7, with zero entrance fee, is an excellent pastime for both young and old. Other outstanding sites are the Hydro and Mariinskiy parks which offer the city with splendid greenery, and an impressive view of the river, respectively.

I should also say the Botanical Garden in Kiev is on the long list of must-see things for foreign guests. Here you kill two birds with one stone in the form of the beautiful rich fauna and the exploration of the Trinity Monastery.

Grand Monuments

Did I mention that Kiev is famous for its historical monuments and landmarks? That’s right. From museums, art galleries to ancient churches, these are significant attractions for throngs of international visitors throughout the seasons.

A magnificent site like Pechersk Lavra monastery is an amazingly enormous complex. It comprises not just cathedrals but ancient caves as well. This site is a holy place, with old churches multitudes congregate. It also draws a large number of tourists from all over the world. As a visitor, you have the chance to see mesmerize in endless beauty on any given day.

The National art museum of Ukraine is another famous landmark. It boasts of the great Ukrainian masterpieces and sculptures, some of which date back to the stone age period of the Kieran Rus. Besides, the contemporary art scene is also quite contagious. Many people cannot resist the urge to check out great exhibitions showing both local and international artistic prowess.

Great Food

Who would not want to venture where there is mouth-watering cuisine?

The exciting news is that Kiev caters to top-notch cuisine. Thus, besides sightseeing, many people revel in the delicacies of the numerous city restaurants.

Then, of course, there is top of the range eateries serving the best of world cuisine. Therefore, besides indulging in traditional Ukrainian delicacies, you can also enjoy a variety of English, Mexican, Italian, and American food.

The fantastic thing is that both local and international food is cheap. For instance, with just $2, you can enjoy a local beer in high-end restaurants. And if yours is the love for fast food, Kiev boasts of one of the busiest branches of the MacDonald’s in the world.

Final Thoughts

I would say the list of attractions in kiev is inexhaustive. But what is more important is that the city has a reputation as a haven. As your tour guide, I possess the most sought-after knowledge and expertise in terms of the best sites, best rates, and all there is to know about Kiev. Together we ensure that you get all the value for your money while in the city.

Maslenitsa in Kiev

The Pirogovo museum is by far one of the most popular places to visit in Kiev. Somewhat unique, it is an open-door museum that works to recreate the living conditions and day to day life of medieval Ukraine.

Every year, a Malenitsa carnival is held within the museum. Malenitsa, otherwise known as butter week, is an ancient Slavic holiday.

In our modern times, Malenitsa is celebrated on the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Easter.

Discover Ukraine together with your kids on your next family vacation

Traveling Ukraine is a delight. Family vacations are wonderful. So it stands to reason that a family vacation in Ukraine is delightfully wonderful!

Traveling to Ukraine with children may seem a daunting task, as any preparation for a family vacation can be, but it is actually more straightforward than you think.

With the bags loaded with everything you’ll need to care of your little ones, the next question is of course how to make sure both the parents and the children enjoy their vacation.

Thankfully, you are in the right place!

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine with children?

Yes, it’s just as safe for kids as it is for adults, which is also plenty safe!

Though recent conflict and tension with Russia has many concerned, Ukraine remains safe to visit. Though the eastern regions are best avoided, the rest of the country is just as safe as any modern nation.

Bad press and stereotypes have given Eastern Europe an off-color image in the media, and these skewed views do not reflect reality.

Where to take children on a trip to Ukraine?

Depending on the time of year and personal preferences, Ukraine offers a wide variety of pastimes that are child and family friendly.

For the outdoor minded, eastern Ukraine is full of beaches, pools, and other water based attractions, such as paddleboats. Playgrounds abound for more land based entertainment.

For those seeking a more relaxed trip, Myrhorod is a renowned spa town, allowing respite for parents as well as fun for the kids.

If larger beaches are your preference, Odessa is the perfect location. Beautiful waters and sprawling sand are sure to bring hours of fun for parents and children alike.

If enjoying land-based nature is more your style, the forests and hills of the Carpathians are a perfect place for a family to spend time together amongst nature. Turn off the cell phones and open your eyes to the wondrous canopies and vistas abounding amongst the mountains.

For urban-minded folks, the capital of Ukraine is an absolute must!

One could easily make the argument that Kiev is an absolute must for any Ukrainian visit, children in tow or not.

For those who do bring the little ones, there are plenty of activities to keep them entertained. Aquaparks abound for those seeking year-round water fun, regardless of age. It is also a great option to consider when traveling with kids to Ukraine in winter.

Plenty of monuments and museums dot the capitol for older children as well. Independence Square is an open, relaxing part of town full of street vendors.

Cathedrals, monasteries, and World War II memorials offer beautiful architecture and learning experiences for children and adults.

The Academic Puppet Theater’s puppet shows provide local entertainment perfect for children of all ages.

Where to enjoy a family dining experience in Kiev?

If one is to visit Kiev, knowledge of where to eat is a must, especially when traveling with children.

Kanapa

For those who want an authentic experience with modern flare, Kanapa offers traditional Eastern European food with a modern twist.

Featuring music and reading rooms, the restaurant harkens back to the salons of old. Moreover, it is pet friendly, a good bonus for our four legged friends!

You will enjoy visiting these 5 unique museums in Ukraine

What are Ukraine most unusual museums?

As a guide, I have encountered this question multiple times. And it makes sense that people are not just reading about, but also want to proceed and see some of the unusual museums in Ukraine.

Of great interest, are some of the eye-raising and knee-jerking tales attached to several of the city’s exhibition halls.

Well, it is also the very reason I’m taking you through some of them figuratively.

Then I can guide you as you explore the city. And by the way, once you have been to any of the following galleries, you won’t look at life in the same way.

Museum of Toilet History

The name sounds weird, right?

Nothing beats the centuries-old rich collection of a wide range of funny and thought-provoking toilets at this famous museum.

There is a full lineup of unique pieces of toilets collected from time immemorial.

You are left not only hit with hard laughs and giggles but also mesmerized by some of the bizarrely built bowels of the past.

One of the things I love to do is take you through a step by step recollection process using exciting videos that show the features and functioning of different types of toilets that have been in existence for thousands of years.

Think of the rich narrative and imagery behind the stone age toilet and sewerage system. Then you can also view other authentic old toilets used by various institutions and famous personalities.

I always ask people to drag their little tots along as they will never look at their modern bowls the same way after this marvelous experience.

Mykola Syadristy’s Microminiatures Museum

I wouldn’t want to sound so pretentious, but l love taking my tourists to this museum.

One of the reasons is that it is so conveniently situated right in the heart of the city of Kiev.

Then, it consists of some of the smallest pieces of art ever known to humankind.

In actual fact, there are just about unique 13 pieces that cannot be seen with a naked eye. So the only way you can view each piece is through a magnifying glass.

It is tough to imagine that a rose can fit in real human hair or that there are miniature figures of famous personalities. But yes, that the reality you can only experience at this small exhibition hall.

Apart from this hall being a real gem among the large monasteries of Kiev, it beats logic how someone can create such tiny and amazing pieces.

Obviously, these are great feats of micro-engineering, which I would urge you to have a look at.

The compact Mykola Syadristy’s Microminiatures Museum is not only one of the most unusual museums in Ukraine and Kiev, but in the world.

Kiev Water Museum

Make this exhibition hall your ultimate stop the next time you are in Kiev. Believe it or not, it ranks high on the list of Kiev unusual museums, which means it is a must-see.

Once you are here, you can gain great insight into things like the way water moves from the cloud, and then as it stealthily moves through different layers of the soil.

This can be quite exhilarating if you choose to bring your kids along. They can learn not just about the water cycle, but also about conservation.

What about the fun part of it?

Well, adults can have such unforgettable experiences as appearing in a soap bubble or watching the fascinating aquarium fish, and the melting of glaciers.

Museum of Strategic Missile Forces

Why is this museum so unusual?

Because it takes you through a very unique and overwhelming world of nuclear missiles.

As unnerving as it is, you come out of the whole experience more knowledgeable about many issues, including the past cold war vibes.

From “touch the Satan” to pushing the “red button”, it is all about frightening actions that could change world history if someone did actually press that button.

As it turns out, there is no launch, and its all about excellent missile development, and education which I wouldn’t want you to miss out.

National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine

This museum is quite interesting because it takes you down memory lane. My advice though, don’t try to go it alone, as it is a steep terrain before the destination.

The good news is that I can take you on an enriching guided tour that unravels the lifestyle and culture that most Ukrainian communities lived decades ago.

While here, you come face to face with well-preserved thatch houses, farm implements, and other bits and pieces which are all so fascinating.

And in the likelihood that hunger pangs start doing their press-ups while here?

Well, you can gorge on delicious traditional food, which resonates with life as it was more than 50 years ago.

Final Say

I like it that Kiev offers some of the most memorable museum options, several of which are right in the heart of the city.

This also brings us back to the fact I’m always available to take you on a guided tour of these halls.

You will be surprised that some  of them are within walking distance depending on your location while in Kiev.

So come along, let your heart race, get a  good laugh, and education in one full package.

Get in touch now and let’s plan your own Kiev adventure, with me as your personal tour guide in Kiev!

See you in Kiev 🙂

As your right-hand person, I can take you to some of the joints that usher you to the headbanging essence that is Kiev nightlife.

Have a hint of the spookiness that was Chernobyl

Chernobyl is an integral part of the modern history of Ukraine.

When talking of Chernobyl, you go back to the mid-1980s to remember the infamous nuclear plant accident that showed the world the riskier side of nuclear energy. The incident has been made more famous courtesy of books, articles, and movies, more so the Godzilla franchise.

While in Kiev, I can guide you on a tour of the Ukrainian Chernobyl museum to get acquainted with the history of the incident.

At least you get to know more of the nuclear disaster without being afraid of a giant mutant lizard emerging from the water.

C’mon Godzilla is just a movie, and its relaxed demeanor is a hint of the Ukrainian hospitality. Away from the mutant folklore, we can have a glimpse at the artifacts, the liquidator ware, scale models, and the famous city of Pripyat, better known as the ghost city of Chernobyl.

Make sure to check my quick guide to Chernobyl first!

Revel in Kiev affordability

I know, the financial aspect is always at the back of the mind for every person planning for a once in a lifetime tour of the city.

Well, unless you are a spendthrift, Kiev is one of the most affordable cities in Europe.

One of the reasons to visit Kiev is that travel, accommodation, food, sightseeing, and everything else that matters is genuinely affordable.

Hop on Ukrainian food tour

Do you do exotic food?

If food ranks top of your must-dos when visiting any place, then look for me, a top food enthusiast.

One of the things that define the Ukrainian culture is its food diversity. You are bound to take your taste bud to one kind of a trip down a variety of dishes.

The Ukrainian cuisine is broad in terms of its offerings where you will have a hint of the vegetarian inspired meals and also a ton of meat dishes. If you are in love with pastry meals, then buckle up as we descend through various baked products.

One of them is “pyrih”, which is a large pie and has a lot of fillings as you prefer it.

You can also try out “palyanytsya”, which is a baked bread and will give you a mouthful of pronunciation problems. We can conclude the Ukrainian cuisine trip by taking part in one of the famed Kiev food tours.

Here, we join other visitors in a party where we go out sampling various delicacies from restaurants and food vendors.

Go on a shopping spree

If you are in for an out of this world shopping experience, then that is another reason to join me as we traverse Kiev.

The Ukrainian capital is renowned for its expansive and eye-popping malls. These shopping centers boast of a wide range of items with relatively affordable price tags.

I can lead you to the best spots depending on the wares you want to acquire and even your budget.

This huge city is famed for some of the world’s attractive landmarks. If it’s your very first time, in Kiev, let’s do it together. What I do is ensure that you see and experience as much as Kiev as you can.

I will introduce you to some of the historic and incredible monuments of the city. Think of Pechersk Lavra Kiev, the famous Orthodox Christian monastery, which draws crowds of pilgrims to its doors year after year.

Then, we can check out Maidan Nezalezhnosti, also known as independence square and st. Sophia cathedral. These, among others, are places you shouldn’t miss to experience!

All what you need to know about getting to Chernobyl from Kiev

Visiting Chernobyl could be one of the most fascinating things you ever do and you will walk away with a much better understanding of humanity, as well as a whole host of interesting facts.

In recent months, there has been a huge surge in interest in the tragic event that occurred at Chernobyl on April 26, 1986. This is largely due to the highly popular HBO mini-series entitled “Chernobyl”.

That being said, the world will never forget this horrific accident and many folks are interested in experiencing first-hand what it’s like to walk around on the site of Chernobyl. This is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is not to be missed!

If this sounds like you, the good news is that it is easier than you think to arrange a tour to Chernobyl and the nearby ghost town of Pripyat!

Can I visit Chernobyl without a guide?

Many people wonder if they can visit Chernobyl without a guide, but I can tell you it will not be possible.

This is due to a very specific reason; the area surrounding Chernobyl (2600 square kilometers or about 1000 square miles) is an exclusion zone with a restricted entrance.

Entrance is only permitted when accompanied by an accredited tour guide and after obtaining special permission. Otherwise, it is practically impossible to gain access to Chernobyl’s ghost town of Pripyat, or the rest of Chernobyl’s exclusion zone.

A guide is therefore an absolute must. Plus, having a guide will give you a lot more insight into Chernobyl and make your visit much more interesting!

What really happened in Chernobyl?

Let’s talk about the most common questions visitors to Chernobyl usually have, starting with what happened there:

On April 26, 1986 at 1:23 am, Chernobyl’s power plant reactor 4 exploded and nothing would ever be the same again in this area.

This explosion occurred during a safety test which had the aim of creating a safety procedure in the event of a power failure. The test was said to have been rushed and this, coupled with an alleged design flaw in the nuclear reactor, resulted in a surge of energy. This then caused the explosion and exposed the reactor’s graphite moderator to the outside air.

After that, a massive plume of radioactive dust entered the surrounding air which negatively affected an untold number of people in the surrounding areas.

What happened in Chernobyl - Kiev tour guide

How Pripyat became the ghost town of Chernobyl

Pripyat, a town where power plant workers and their families lived, was hit the hardest. The impact of this devastating event can still be seen in the town of Pripyat where abandoned homes still have furniture, beds, household equipment and toys that were left behind in a rush.

Situated north of the power plant, Pripyat’s residents (some 49,000 people) were evacuated 36 hours after the explosion as this was within the 10 km essential evacuation zone. Evacuees had to leave behind all their personal belongings and flee the city as soon as possible.

When it was found that the radioactive fallout from the plume continued to be generated, residents within 30 km of the explosion were also told to evacuate, meaning an additional 60,000 people who lived in the villages and small towns surrounding Chernobyl.

But, is it safe to go to Chernobyl?

Yes, it is!

Over the years, the reactor has been contaminated, topsoil in the area has been removed and many wooden structures have been taken down. Radiation is ghost town is higher than other places, but is within safe limits making it safe for tourists.

If you are worried about radiation, I would recommend using a radiation measurement instrument to check the amount of radiation you are exposed to, just to ease your mind!

When using one of these instruments, you will be pleasantly surprised that radiation you receive will be tiny and roughly the equivalent to a short plane flight!

You can find more about Chernobyl radiation in my post: Kiev is Safe From Radiation and This is Why.

When exploring the old buildings and structures in Chernobyl and Pripyat, I recommend using caution and stepping carefully as these structures haven’t been renovated since 1986.

Can I visit Chernobyl power plant itself?

Your tour guide will get as close as possible, but visiting Chernobyl power plant itself is off-limits. The fact that many areas in zone are restricted. Expect your Chernobyl tour guide to provide you with all the relevant information before you go there, and during your tour.

Your Quick Guide To Visiting Chernobyl - Can I visit Chernobyl power plant itself - Kiev tour guide

How much does it cost to tour Chernobyl?

The cost of a tour to Chernobyl will vary from company to company. In general, you can expect to pay anything from $100 to $500 per person, which obviously depends on the kind of Chernobyl tour you wish to take.

Does anyone live in Chernobyl or Pripyat nowadays?

Believe it or not, yes, there are some people who live within the exclusion zone!

They don’t live in Pripyat itself, but in some old villages in the area. These are mainly people of old age who just decided (for their own reasons) to live the rest of their days in the houses where they were born, and regardless of all unfavorable conditions.

That being said, the people who lived in the towns before the explosion will never return there again.

So, are you planning to experience Chernobyl, on your next visit to Kiev?

Just contact me now, and I will do my best to help you with your Chernobyl adventure!

See you in Kiev 🙂

On various travel forums, I have come across the question: Is Kiev worth visiting? Whenever I see the question, I cannot help but smile to myself while mouthing my answer:

“Yes! Of course it is!” And not only because it is the capital of Ukraine, but also because Kiev is a phenomenal city, and one of Europe’s most important ones. Kiev is the womb of eastern European culture and Slavic civilization. All around the city you can find historic monuments as evidence of its ancient history and culture.

Naturally, stones and buildings alone do not make a city; its people do, and the people of Kiev are amazing! You might feel as though they are reserved and cautious (which is true), but give it time and allow yourself to socialize with them. You’ll soon discover their heartwarming friendliness, kindness, and appreciation for everyone who comes to visit and explore their city. Rest assured, they know how to have a good time and share it with Kiev’s guests. It is not an accident that the city is becoming the epicenter of partying and fun in Europe, with a nightlife scene that is second to none.

If this advice does not sell you on traveling to Kiev for your next vacation, let me tell you more about why you should start packing your bags now:

Kiev is ancient

Kiev is older than Moscow by a thousand years. Yes, you read that right!

Many people do not know this, but Kiev was the first Rus kingdom, the origin of today’s Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. It’s even called “the mother of Russian cities,” as it preceded almost all the major cities across the lands of these three Slavic nations.

Golden Gates of Kiev

The first settlements in Kiev go back twenty thousand years to the Upper Paleolithic Period, and the city of Kiev itself was established in the sixth century, reaching its golden age as the center of Kievan Rus federation during the tenth and twelfth centuries. That is not to mention its role during the reign of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, then the Kingdom of Poland, the Russian Empire, to USSR and finally independent Ukraine.

This legacy formed the city’s rich culture and gifted it with spectacular architectural mosaics and stunning monuments of different eras and times.

Kiev is vibrant

Kiev has a modern vibe and a true cosmopolitan spirit. It is one of the world’s trendiest cities that craves everything new and exciting.

Kiev is one of today’s IT giants, thanks to its large population of highly educated youth, who contribute to the city’s constant drive toward growth and modernization in every field of life. Ukraine is the fourth most educated nation and has the third most educated workforce in the world. This generation truly knows how to work hard and party even harder!

They also made Kiev the party capital of Eastern Europe and the host to its most exclusive nightlife scenes. Beyond that are the jaw-dropping adventures its daring you to experience. All that and more puts Kiev among the top tourist destinations in the world and makes it an amazing experience worth your time and money.

It is very affordable

It doesn’t cost much to travel to Kiev or to live there. In fact, as of 2014, Ukraine became known as the cheapest European country for tourists, and I can guarantee that you will not get the same value for your money anywhere else around the continent. And I am not talking about some mediocre level; on the contrary, you can stay in good hotels or apartments and dine in classy restaurants and cafés with a medium-to-small budget. To put it in numbers, you can have a great time in Kiev with a daily budget of $50-$100.

You will notice that Kiev is addicted to glamour and luxury, which you can enjoy at a fraction of the cost of somewhere else in Europe, but please be realistic: do not think that you will own the city with some pocket change!

It is realistic, however, to have a five-day vacation in the city and spend only $250. Setting your budget for the same duration at $1,000 will give you a killer time and amazing experiences that you will not stop telling everyone about for years to come!

Read my post Kiev Budget Guide to get the full picture of traveler’s expenses in Kiev.

It is safe for tourists

People love to have an opinion about everything regardless of how informed they are about it. Just try telling your friends you are traveling to Kiev, and one (if not many) of them will tell you he/she heard it is dangerous over there!

Despite popular urban myth, Kiev is a safe city for tourists. Certainly, the events of 2013-2014 and the 24/7 new cycle about the conflict with Russia raised people’s concerns, but try talking to anyone who has been to Kiev recently, and he/she will tell you that it might be safer than your own hometown.

Take five minutes to read Yes, Kiev Is Safe for Solo Travelers, and you will buy a ticket as soon as you are done reading!

Astonishing nightlife

People in Kiev have a lust for glamorous, lavish, and exciting parties all year round. Bars, cabarets, and Kiev nightclubs are amazing party houses; they know how to ignite exciting experiences and put on spectacular shows. You can easily develop a case of fun-overload while partying in Kiev!

Lavish clubs are the norm in the city, and the good news is that you can experience them at a fraction of the cost of somewhere else!

Review Kiev Nightlife Prices to find out how much a night of partying in Kiev may cost you.

Haven for adrenaline junkies!

Kiev is the ultimate destination for anyone who craves adrenaline, and I think we actually have the full package here, starting with one of the world’s most famous adventures: Pripyat, the Ghost City of Chernobyl.

You can also co-pilot a private or aerobatic plane, or even jump from one and go skydiving!

If the skies are not for you, don’t worry, you will have the chance to explore the mystical Kiev underground labyrinth city of tunnels.

Another favorite adventure among adrenaline lovers visiting Kiev is driving a tank and shooting military-grade weapons. I recommend riding across the countryside if you are traveling to Kiev in the summer. There are many extreme adventures in Kiev to choose from. Browse some of them in my post Kiev Amazing Adventures to find the one that suits you.

Crowded with amazing monuments

Kiev is a city of many attractions. One of my friends used to say that Kiev is a city where you can go to a new place, do new things, dine and party in new places every day for a full month without doing the same thing twice. Well, he was absolutely right!

There are many monuments and tourist attractions to visit as well as many experiences to enjoy in Kiev. I find it impossible to list them all in one place, and not for lack of trying!

So, let me at least share with you a glimpse of what you can do and experience in Kiev:

Explore the golden-domed churches

The city’s spectacular golden-domed churches and cathedrals are an essential part of Kiev’s heritage and history and are among its most recognizable landmarks internationally.

The most famous among them are Kiev Monastery of Caves (Kiev Pechersk Lavra)–one thousand years old–and Saint Sophia Cathedral–nine hundred years old. Both are recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

Kiev weather | Kiev city | Kiev Tour Guide | Spring

Tour the golden domed churches of Kiev

I also suggest you spend some time and visit Saint Volodymyr’s Cathedral and Saint Andrew’s Church. Also, do not miss the chance to tour Saint Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery: its walls contain amazing stories of tears, pain, and resurrection, as the historic site was totally demolished in the mid-1930s by the Soviet regime before its reconstruction and re-opening over sixty years later in 1999, using many original parts of the old monastery.

Saint Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery

A window into the spiritual cultural world of Kiev, each one of Kiev’s golden-domed churches is a treasure for lovers of architecture.

Descend into the world’s deepest metro station

Did you know that Kiev has the deepest metro station in the world?

The station is called Arsenalna. Riding its escalators will take you five or six minutes, ending at 105.5 meters (~346 feet) below the surface, to a simple platform that lacks the elegance or careful artistic designs of other stations like Golden Gate (Zoloti Vorota) station but holds the title of the world’s deepest metro station.

Discover the Motherland Monument

In my early days of guiding tourists in Kiev, I was amazed that all but few had no idea about the existence of this breathtaking monument and iconic symbol of our city.

Motherland Monument is the seventh tallest statue in the world according to many sources. At 102 meters (~335 feet) it is higher than the famous New York resident Statue of Liberty.

Things to Do in Kiev | Kiev tourist attractions | Kiev City Tour

The monument offers great views of Kiev. You can observe it from two observation decks at 36 meters (~118 feet) and 91 meters (~298 feet) height.

Then tour the Second World War museums

The statute’s base hosts the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, a great attraction and monumental reminder of the high cost and unprecedented sacrifices of our nation alongside the rest of the former USSR nations during the war.

Second World War Museum

Surrounding the statue is 27 acres of open-air exhibition area that includes various Soviet-era weapons and equipment of different tanks, heavy artillery, armored boats, fighter jets, attack helicopters, and even a mobile strategic missile unit.

The rest of the territory is an artistic masterpiece. Its highlights include the breathtaking war panorama on the walls of the tunnel, midway between the main entrance and Motherland Monument, Battle of Dnieper Monument, and an ultimate tribute to all the fallen souls with the Flame of Glory.

So, are you ready to explore Kiev?

Comment below what you would like to experience in Kiev, and what places interest you the most. I am curious to know 🙂

Kiev is not a city that goes into hibernation during the winter!

Although it might sound unbelievable for people who have not been to Kiev before during winter, the city is very active throughout the colder times of the year.

I even have the impression that our city is livelier during winter than any other season of the year, especially when it comes to nightlife entertainment, café/restaurant scene and cultural life.

It seems to me that the winter breeze ignites rather than paralyzes the vibrant city of Kiev. You will be surprised how amazing Kiev winter life is and how many activities you can enjoy during your winter trip to Kiev!

Where to go in Kiev in winter?

As I mentioned above, for a vibrant city like Kiev, cooler weather is never a showstopper. In fact, this season has its own pace of life with many things to see and do.

Let us explore some of Kiev’s winter activities that you can experience yourself during you visit:

Skiing and snowboarding at Protasov Yar

You do not have to spend a lot or travel far away from Kiev to enjoy skiing.

Our city has its own skiing resort not far from the city center of Kiev. It is called Protasov Yar and is a popular winter attraction for everyone who enjoys winter sports.

You should give it a try, and even if you have never tried skiing before, do not worry, there are many trainers on site who can guide you and give you one-on-one training sessions for $20-$30 per hour.

Gear and equipment can be rented from the specialties booth at the base of the resort, near its entrance.

I highly recommend you go there and give it a try, just dress warm and get ready for an exciting experience.

Enjoy New Year festivities in Kiev

New Year is the mother of all holidays in Kiev, and in Ukraine in general. It is our main festivity and party of the year. No other event can even come close to it.

The New Year festivities start on the first day of December and continue through the first 7-10 days in January, until the holiday aura starts wearing off.

Our Christmas and New Year village that hosts the main festivities is located around the area of Sofiyivska Square and Mykhailivska Square.

The village has beautifully themed wooden booths that serves a variety of food, desserts, hot chocolate, and mulled wine making for good food tour. They occupy the short street, Volodymyrs’kyi Passage, which connects the two squares.

Sofiyivska Square is where you will find Kiev and Ukraine’s main Christmas and New Year. In the background, you can see the iconic bell tower of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral; it is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of Kiev’s top tourist attractions. There is an entrance to the cathedral’s complex territory at the tower’s base, make sure to spare sometime to explore the spectacular 1000 year old cathedral.

Take a cultural tour

Winter in Kiev is the spark that ignites its cultural life. The movie theaters are always busy, art galleries and exhibitions take place all over the city, with the most interesting at Pinchuk Art Centre and Mystetskyi Arsenal. As for the opera, despite its almost daily performances, it is a popular attraction and you will be lucky to get a ticket!

Take a cultural tour

My personal tip for any tourist who appreciates Ukranian culture is to not miss the chance of enjoying one of the outstanding performances at the National Ukrainian Opera in Kiev. Our ensemble is among the best in the world with their breathtaking opera and ballet performances.

You might also entertain yourself by watching a play in Kiev. It is a good way to have a view into the art culture of Ukraine. If you cannot find an English performance, contact me to arrange a cultural tour that includes one.

Music concerts are also a common winter theme. Well-known singers visit, and local bands have life music performances throughout the week.

Many nightclubs host their own concerts during this season, so try to find one with an interesting program, or send a tour request and I will arrange it for you.

Spend a day at the water park

It might be cold outside, but you can still enjoy small piece of summer in Kiev’s favorite indoor water amusement park. Dream Island is probably the best waterpark in Kiev, with variety of slides and its own spa zone that comes with several hot jacuzzis.

Spend a day at the water park

The water park is a great way to rid your body from the cold of the day!

The waterpark is family friendly, located in a separate wing of Dream Town shopping and entertainment complex, covering 24,000 square meters (~6 acres). In that complex are also three restaurants, a sushi bar, and another bar that you will need to swim to in the middle one of the park’s pools. The price for a full day access is around $10.

Party at a nightclub

Winter is a good time to hit the clubs in Kiev, so why not join the party in one of Kiev best nightclubs?

I am sure that you will find it to be an amazing experience.

Our city is known as one of the best party capitals of Europe and its reputation as one continues to grow, leading to trends such as tourists who travel to Kiev for the weekend to experience the parties of its legendary nights.

I recommend going to Caribbean Club; it is an established nightlife destination and one of the best nightclubs in Kiev. Caribbean Club is very tourist friendly, as well as affordable.

The entrance fee is between $9 and $14.50 on average, depending on the type of event and day of the week. There are free days as well, but not according to the regular schedule (that I am aware of); you will need to confirm in advance.

Drink prices at the bar are similar to any midrange bar in Kiev. Also, you will not have a hard time entering because of their relaxed dress code.

If you prefer high-end clubs, then aim for the top of the mountain, and head straight to CHI, the flagman of Kiev nightclubs. It is pricier than Caribbean Club, has a strict dress code, and a “face control” policy.

You need to dress up, otherwise you will probably be disappointed at the entrance. I have more detailed information about Kiev nightlife, its best clubs, and bars in another post. Check out Kiev nightlife guide to find out how to navigate the nightlife scene in Kiev and make the most out of it.

Go ice-skating

There are number of ice skating rinks in Kiev. The best, in my opinion, is Dream Town ice skating skirt on the third floor of the complex. It is large enough that over 100 skaters can be on the ice and skate comfortably without feeling that it is too packed.

One hour of skating there will cost you between $2.50 and $5. That includes ice skates and protective gear. The interiors of the skating area are cool, so long as you ignore the weird artificial trees!

Go ice-skating

I think the interior designer went for a pool in a forest concept, although it seems to be missing something. But, New Year decorations are always magical!

If you prefer an open-air ice skating rink, you will like the Expo Center of Ukraine rink. Full day access will cost you around $3.50. It is usually active for one month, between mid-December and mid-January, as part of Kiev’s New Year festivities.

The place is well organized and the Christmas and New Year spirit makes it a favorite destination for families and young people. The positive energy and smiles there are infectious!

You should give it a try when you visit Kiev 🙂

Take a stroll in the snow

Walking the streets of Kiev after a snowfall is an enchanting experience. The weather feels warmer than what you would expect, giving you a cozy feeling as you stroll around the city. Do not be surprised to see some adults having a snow ball fight on the streets!

Take a stroll in the snow

There are many spectacular places to go to in Kiev after a snowfall, like the monastery of caves, botanical garden, Andrew’s Descent, and Mariinski Park to name a few. A stroll along Khreschatyk Street after or during a soft snowfall will fill you with that New Year/Christmas vibe. Do not forget to capture the moment with pictures for an unforgettable reminder of your pleasant time in Kiev.

Enjoy a game of bowling

If you come to Kiev with some friends, and would like some indoor entertainment, going bowling will be a great idea. Go to Gulliver shopping center, it has a nice trendy bowling alley on the 5th floor.

There are other places like Dream Town and Jumbo Bowling Club that you can also try, but my recommendation is Gulliver as it is enjoying higher popularity mainly due to its location in the center of Kiev.

The cost is between $6 and $13 per hour, depending on the alley and time of the day. If you are a beginner, do not overthink it and just go, you will have even more fun!

Watch a movie

Why not?

It is not a bad idea to watch a movie if you have a unplanned time in your trip program.

Movies in all Ukrainian major movie theaters are played with Ukrainian voice over, so unless you know the language, you probably won’t understand anything.

Your options will be limited to movie theaters that have English movie nights. One that I can recommend is Zhovten Сinema. The English session is referred to with the shortcut ENG on the website.

Drink something hot

Kiev has incredible cafés where you can enjoy warm drinks in winter. You can read my short post about Warm Cafes to Stop by in Kiev’s Cold Weather for my top suggestions of places where you can enjoy a warm drink.

We also have a tradition of drinking mulled wine in winter, so join us for a cup during your winter trip!

Drink something hot

If you do not drink alcohol, do not worry, barmen are creative and will show off a large collection of warm drinks unique to every café or bar you choose as your warming place.

You should also try a cup of warm hot chocolate at any of Lviv Chocolate Factory’s locations in Kiev. Personally, I prefer the one on Andrew’s Descent. The hot chocolate is too thick to drink; instead, you eat it with a spoon!

Lviv Chocolate Factory is a household name in Ukraine; all the chocolate they use is an in-house crafted chocolate. They also sell marvelous chocolate souvenirs, so do not forget to buy one before you leave.

Kiev winter is another dimension of entertainment and excitement that you should try if you have the opportunity. Learn how to stay warm in Kiev winter and you will be ready to enjoy your visit to our city.
