The post 5 Top of The Range Health Spas in Kiev appeared first on Kiev Tour Guide | Private Tour Guide in Kiev.
]]>Again, here is the good news. There is a wide range of locations within the city that offer spa therapy and excellent holistic activities.
Some of them are within walking distance. You can enjoy amazing pamper sessions, while also mesmerizing in the beautiful local scenery. Here are some of the very best health spas in Kiev that I usually recommend.
One of the health and wellness resorts I have a nag for is the Spa Sense Podil. Why? Because its highly accessible, being right within the city. The venue is also a perfect place for ultimate relaxation. So if you are in Kiev and feeling tired and lethargic, you can go here.
Some of the excellent services include hours long scrubbing, and sauna. You can also benefit from deep professional massage, which leaves you feeling light and fully refreshed.
I always joke that if you want to have your back crack in a good way, then this spa is your best bet. They have a specialist applying a particular posture to realign your back.
Another game-changer is their infusion of special herbs, which permeate into your whole body system, ensuring that you feel more rejuvenated and energetic.
I can also vouch for the staff who are warm, friendly, and welcoming, and never set a foot wrong in the dispensation of all types of wellness services. Other than that, the prices are also quite affordable.
The truth is that most of my tourists arrive in Kiev with jetlag. Sightseeing also involves lots of walking, which makes you quite weary. And if at all yours is a soft bed, then the impact on your body is quickly apparent. In this case, I usually recommend a Thai massage for deep relaxation.
One of the best places you can get this type of bodywork is at the elephant. Of course, the location features excellent ambiance, while the ancient technique heals and rejuvenates your body by eliminating any lingering physical and mental imbalance.
The technique also eliminates muscle blocks, while at the same time enhancing blood circulation to all sections of your body. Only professional massage therapists handle the sessions. As such, they can easily identify problem zones on your body and channel the therapy rhythmically.
The cost of this type of massage depends mostly on the duration and intensity of the session. A typical session can last for as little as 30 minutes. Others can go for as long as 3 hours; it all depends on your needs.
Are we looking for spa variety? Well, this spa features a wide range of unique massages to improve your overall well-being. From the excellent stone rubbing to chocolate spa treatments, hydro massage, and pearl baths, you are spoilt for choice in the line-up of therapies.
I prefer taking my clients to this wellness center because of the over the top professionalism from the staff. Besides, you can also enjoy a variety of therapy sessions at reasonable prices. The location is quite impressive, and consisting of a private beach area from where you can enjoy the sea breeze.
The Bath of Aphrodite is a unique experience that I’m always eager to recommend. The venue is about 6 kilometers from the city center, allowing you to access quickly. Other than that, I would gladly say it’s the perfect place for hot water bathtubs.
The primary technique, which can only compare to water and fire baptism, is simply amazing. To begin with, you immerse into a tub of hot water, which is about 45 degrees and then plunge right into the cold freezing river, which is usually about 5 degrees.
The icy water refreshes and rejuvenates, and works great for your skin, too. Meanwhile, underneath the bathtub, there is a live-fire which fuels the iron cast tub. It features a cold faucet for temperature control once the container becomes extremely hot.
Did I mention that the river is part of the magnificent view at this location? Yes, it contributes to the beauty and serenity of the spa area. I can also assure you that the staff is quite warm and professional and the prices are quite friendly. We can always place it on the itinerary of sightseeing and experiencing a new lifestyle.
Its official, Kuzmichevskie, promises a life-changing experience. I would say the wellness center is both beautiful and quiet with first-rate facilities. Some of the excellent services include honey and sea salt scrub and spot-on parenie therapy.
There is also a hot tub, and a pond to take a plunge. Then if you need a quick nap, no problem, as the venue features an authentic banya room for the same purpose. Since there is no catering facility, you may have to carry your food and drinks.
Such is necessary as you may take more than a few hours at the session, depending on the type of treatment /therapy you are having. Other than that, expect only warmth and professionalism. the prices are quite reasonable and depending on the kind of spa service.
There are so many reasons why a health spa should be on your itinerary while you are in Kiev. For instance, most of my clients lead highly busy lives, and they haven’t had the time/opportunity to take care of themselves. This is the right time to sneak in some well-deserved TLC.
Depending on the services, you get a whole new experience about deep relaxation and rejuvenation of body and mind. As your tour guide, I’m well-equipped to take you along this journey, showing you the best places in Kiev, and ensuring you get the best spa treatment with professional therapists.

]]>The post What Draws Many Tourists to Ukraine? appeared first on Kiev Tour Guide | Private Tour Guide in Kiev.
]]>Well, it so happens that Ukraine is host to some of the oldest and legendary cities, including Kiev, Odessa, and Lviv, which have a unique history. But it also has been at the center-stage of tough times, including the disaster at Chernobyl. It is through such situations that sheer determination for restoration has come about, clearly inspiring and creating interest beyond its borders.
Let’s investigate the main reasons why so many tourists are coming to Ukraine.
I have long maintained that Ukraine’s vibrant history, is a crucial reason that attracts many tourists. Fortunately, I’m not very far from the truth. Although tragic at times, the history of Ukraine is also quite inspiring. Examples are the Holocaust-related world war II, the Chernobyl disaster, and other happenings that mark the catastrophic history of Ukraine. But there are also so many punctuations of triumph, making the country one of great success.
Let’s reflect. Chernobyl is home to various ghost towns such as Pripyat. This, of course, garners much interest from so many visitors from all over the world. But then again, typical Chernobyl tours always factor in a visit to the exclusion zone. This tourist circuit is quite popular, and still part of the itinerary for my clients.
According to world heritage, Ukraine consists of some of the most marvelous landmarks. These include St. Sophia Cathedral, built in the 11th century. The Carpathian Mountains and forests remain a wonder to behold.
Another sensation is the Struve Geodetic Arc, which links Norway’s Hammerfest to Ukraine’s Black sea. Let’s not forget the monastery of caves founded by St. Antony and St. Theodosia in Kiev. The country also has the most astounding monastery and ancient cathedrals that ever existed, including St. Michaels.
From Kiev, Odessa, Lviv to Crimea, visitors consider these locations as still primeval and virtually undiscovered by the outside world. And this is partially true. Some of the villages still maintain their original way of life. A perfect example is the Carpathian forest, where locals wear traditional clothes and stick to their ancient farming practice; it’s quite interesting to see.
Also, tourists coming here have a chance to buy woven crafts and sculptures, some made from the rare local wood.
Lviv is the cultural city of Ukraine and features some of the western architectural designs. Most tourists throng here to have a feel of the quaint old town with narrow streets and magnificent towering churches.
Kiev, on the other hand, is famed for some of the largest dome churches and architecture. This comes with a mix of never-ending nightlife, which is a magnet for the most significant number of travelers coming into the country.
Tourism is such an essential aspect of human development in Ukraine. It’s for that reason that most of its services are moving from the government to the private sector. As such, companies and even private citizens are coming up with impressive infrastructure in terms of recreational
facilities.
As we speak, thousands of hotels, campsites, motels, and other types of tourism facilities are in existence. This, in effect, attracts more and more foreign guests because of the imminent possibilities that await them. Talk of the spas, health resorts, and mud therapy facilities within these tourism centers, then, you have both the seasoned and curious tourist making a line-up to visit.
I know it comes as a stagger, but great things are happening in Ukraine’s medical sector. The country has been gradually but surely dusting itself from the sorry state of its health systems of the Soviet era. Structures are now up and running so smoothly, thus attracting people from
other countries.
According to verified statistics, a sizable number of tourists are coming here for a wide range of medical services. Various health restorative services, such as dental, ophthalmology, and plastic surgery, among others, are entirely on-demand. Besides the high quality, most people think that these services are more affordable if you compare with other countries in Europe. Medicine in Ukraine is probably one of the first and most best services in this field, make sure to check them out!
Ukraine is known for a wide range of advantages. This includes available and affordable
services. From transportation, food, medical care, and accommodation, costs for these services seem much lower than the rest of Europe and America. For example, eating out for most foreigners seems quite affordable. It’s a respite in a world punctuated by high inflation and high prices.
Did you also know that Ukraine has some of the mindboggling scenic views and magnificent landscape? That’s so true, and in the real sense, people have a knack for calm, greenery and beauty, which is in plenty here.
Whether you are visiting the countryside, or right within the cities, you are bombarded with spectacular backdrops and sites. Other aspects such as traditional Ukrainian village lifestyles, food, housing, and farming practices are always of great interest to the outsider.
There are so many advantages that tourists find in visiting Ukraine. The country is mostly safe, and concerns about radiation and political instability are unfounded. Then, Ukraine is host to some of the most magnificent backdrops and climates ideal for tourism-related activities.
Tourists have the opportune moments to savor the vibrant cities, grand monuments that have withstood time, breathtaking landscapes, and the attractive countryside. And not to forget, the country has the warmest, friendly and welcoming people. Finally, as your tour guide, I have a long list of the very best, and must-see places in Ukraine. Come and let’s see what awaits.

]]>The post How To Get The Most Out Of Your Short Trip To Ukraine appeared first on Kiev Tour Guide | Private Tour Guide in Kiev.
]]>Well, worry not, luckily for you there are methods, schedules, and itineraries being created by the day for most countries around the world. I have decided to make one for my varied, beautiful, and fun-filled country of Ukraine.
With 7 UNESCO world heritage sites and a plethora of tourist sights and destinations to see (not to mention a wonderfully welcoming and rich culture to witness,) it wasn’t an easy task.
However, we’ve succeeded in creating what we believe to be a short yet enjoyable trip to Ukraine so you can get the most out of every minute.
So, let’s begin in one of the most western situated cities of Ukraine – Lviv.

A greatly underrated city, Lviv is a match for many of Europe’s more well-known cities.
Having escaped largely unscathed from WWII, the city has maintained its classic and nostalgic architecture, with every building telling its own history.
Lviv has also kept the relatively cozy and small feeling of a pre-war city, making our job of traversing it in one day that bit easier.
To really get the most out of your trip, why not join the famous walking tour that departs from the Market/Rynok square. It’s completely free and no-strings-attached.
You’ll get your bearings on the city from this tour that finishes at the Lviv Opera House, a wonder of architecture and considered to be the main point of the city.
From here, it becomes much easier to branch out into other parts of the city. After taking in the beauty of the opera house, it is a one road journey to another masterpiece – the Armenian Cathedral.
Luckily for us, we can find the pharmacy museum nearby!
In fact, this popular and must-see museum is simply one street away from the Armenian Cathedral.
After a gander around the fascinating museum, the beautiful, Baroque Dominican Cathedral.
Only a hop, skip and a jump away is Town Hall’s observation deck that can truly give you the opportunity to see the most of Lviv from its great heights!
From here, access by foot to many of Lviv’s most spectacular tourist destinations such as the City Arsenal and the Latin Cathedral is possible.
So, take a walk through the winding streets and be sure to pop into one of Lviv’s famous coffee shops to give yourself an energy boost for your action-packed day!

Maybe you’ve decided to take a trip to the breath-taking Carpathian mountains and after basking in nature and awe-inspiring sights, you’re ready to enter back into the hustle and bustle of city life.
To get yourself eased back in, Chernivtsi is the perfect cozy and homely city just for you! Located just north-east of the Carpathians, the journey can be easily made by bus.
Upon arriving in Chernivtsi, you’ll find a laid-back and calming atmosphere that’s perfect for taking a breather.
I recommend that you hire a personal tour guide to get the most out of this city in the least time.
You’ll be led through the amazingly colourful streets from the Opera Square to the Holy Spirit Orthodox Cathedral, locally known as the pink church.
You’ll even get to see one of Ukraine’s many UNESCO world heritage sites at Chernivtsi University.
Bes sure to then climb to the top of the Chernivtsi city hall which offers a spectacular panorama of the entire city.
To truly unwind and get the most out of your trip to Chernivtsi, it’s highly recommended that you simply take a leisurely stroll through its streets coming into the evening.
Chernivtsi’s streets are a highly unique mixture of Slavic and Austro-Hungarian influences – not to be missed!

Where to next? To Odessa of course!
You really can’t miss this seaside city when exploring Ukraine. And what’s more, getting there from Chernivtsi won’t be a problem.
Hop on the last bus from Chernivtsi to Khmelnytsky, leaving at 21:00 Chernivtsi and arriving in Khmelnytsky at 00:30.
Get yourself on the 01:20 train from Khmelnytsky that arrives in Odessa at 08:50 and you’ll be ready to go exploring again! (If you’ve availed of your train time for sleeping that is.) You’ll find yourself welcomed into a calm yet vibrant city, composed of both historical and modern aspects – they don’t call it the pearl of the black sea for nothing.
So, where to get started?
Consider using The Odessa Opera House, known as the second-largest opera house in the world, as your starting line.
Nearby, you will find the majestic and ceremonious Potemkin stairs. With 192 steps in total, you might break a sweat but the terrific view is worth it in the end.
Just a short walk away you’ll then find yourself on Deribasivska Street. Considered the beating heart of Odessa, it’s not to be missed and it won’t eat into your time too much!
Take this opportunity to sit down for a nice meal out on the many terraces and then pop into the Odessa passage just off the main street.
To end your long day of sightseeing, only a short walk away is the beautiful monument to the founders of Odessa.

And last but not least Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine and your grand finale.
Leaving Kiev for last is highly recommended as you may wish to extend your stay upon arrival to explore the ancient city in-depth and also due to the ease at which a flight can be caught to all corners of the world from this beautiful city.
After your delicious morning coffee, it’s best to head over to the Saint Sophia’s Cathedral.
One of the city’s finest landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s best to get here early before the hordes of tourists show up and slow you down.
A short walk away down Proyizd Volodymyrsky will lead you to the beautiful St Michael’s gold-domed monastery.
From here, the Zhytniy market, where you can soak up the true local culture of Kiev while testing the local cuisine, isn’t far.
After lunch, you can take a stroll down to the Chernobyl museum and if museums aren’t your thing, why not explore Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra?
This pilgrimage site for people of the Orthodox faith is glorious in its uniqueness and beauty.
To follow up, get a true taste of Ukraine’s history by visiting the Motherland monument. And if your feet weren’t hurting enough after all that walking, finish your day off with a bang and dance your way into the cities famous nightlife.
So, what are you waiting for? Book your flights and explore all that Ukraine has to offer.
You’re never too busy to explore and as we’ve seen – you can get a taste of Ukraine within days!
I hope this guide has given you some ideas for your trip to Ukraine! I can’t wait to welcome you!

]]>The post What Languages Are Really Spoken in Ukraine? appeared first on Kiev Tour Guide | Private Tour Guide in Kiev.
]]>Over time, Russia has come to be a strong influence within Ukrainian culture due to intertwined pasts and close proximity. Not only this, but our respective languages are highly similar allowing for an even closer connection to grow.
Whether or not this connection has been cherished or despised over the years, it is undeniable. And this connection is key to understanding the linguistic culture of Ukraine.
You may have guessed by now that the two main languages of Ukraine are both Ukrainian and Russian.
Though Ukrainian and Russian are spoken throughout the country in varying degrees from region to region, most Ukrainians will tell you that Ukrainian is the dominant language within the country.
The development of the Ukrainian language in all spheres of social life is encouraged by the Ukrainian government, whereas only the free use of the Russian language is accounted for.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Russian language is pushed to the side as a considerable amount of people within Ukraine still speak it in their day to day lives.
On top of this, many notices and instructions will be translated into both languages.
In a short answer, very similar!
Both languages are not only from the Slavic family but are both known as eastern Slavic languages.
Due to their similar origins, both languages have almost the exact same grammar and vocabulary.
Many people claim that Russian and Ukrainian are mutually intelligible with a monolingual speaker of one language being able to understand a monolingual speaker of the other language.
This claim has been backed up by multiple studies that claim Russian and Ukrainian to be 90% alike.
Of course, this varies from region to region of Ukraine with the massive amount of dialects intersperse throughout the country, but the general consensus is that both languages are almost exactly alike.
67.5% of Ukrainians cite Ukrainian as their primary language while 38% note Russian as being their chosen language, with the majority of Russian speakers are situated within the eastern region of Ukraine.
The vast majority of Russian speakers can be found within the Donbas and Crimean regions.

Ask any inhabitant of Kiev and they’ll tell you that the main language on the street is Russian.
It’s also acknowledged that the Ukrainian language is gaining traction, but most interactions are still held within Russian.
Despite any rumors you’ve heard, in reality, there’s barely any cold feeling towards the Russian language in Kiev and people will happily undertake a conversation in either language as long as they have adequate proficiency.
The level of spoken English within English is still relatively low compared to its European counterparts.
But don’t get me wrong, this isn’t due to lack of care but the already complicated linguistic culture of Ukraine. And though spoken English may not be perfect, many Ukrainians of the younger generations will be able to understand your questions or statements.
Only 20% of Ukrainians claim to have conversational skills in the English language.
If you’re concerned about being able to get by using only English in Ukraine or simply curious about the use of the language within the country, especially in the capital, then head over to Speaking English In Kiev: Is It An Effective Means Of Communication?
So, you want to be like a native and you’ve picked Ukrainian as your language of choice. Perhaps you even just want to have an easier trip to Ukraine.
Either way, there are plenty of available pathways from which you can learn Ukrainian.
Of course, the preferable pathway of language learning for beginners is online.
You can learn at your own pace, to the beat of your own drum, and can build up a foundation of grammar and vocabulary before releasing your Ukrainian language skills into the real world.
Some of the recommended courses can be found with a simple search online.
If you’d rather dive right in and start speaking the language from the get-go – a Ukrainian language tutor may just be right for you.
Websites like 101 Languages has great free resources to kick start your learning experience, just make sure to open the web not the mobile version, as they will not be visible otherwise.
You can also try Dolingo, they have a decent Ukrainian program, and it is all free.
But if you wish to get a more realistic experience of speaking Ukrainian, then there are plenty of Ukrainian speakers who would be delighted to tutor you through online calling services such as Skype.
Start at Tutor Hunt or Preply where you will find plenty of professional tutors.
Why not get in contact with a Ukrainian speaking penpal if you want to improve your writing or watch some Ukrainian movies or TV.

Famed for their unique sense of humor, April fools’ day becomes a mix of colors, balloons, wacky wigs, clowns, carnival costumes and above all else: smiles and laughter.
Take a peek at the clown parade, a classic tradition that is central to the carnival.
You’ll be treated to a veritable fusion of mimes, musicians, dancers, and a whole variety of brightly colored clowns.

Lviv is a delightful and attractive city with its romantic yet cozy undertones. It’s not surprising then that the wonderful Christmas season is particularly wonderful here.
Home to the most restaurant/cafés/bars per capita in Europe, you’ll have a great selection of warm and cozy places to choose from when diving in out of the cold.
Picture yourself with a coffee cupped between your swiftly warming-up hands as you look out from a unique and toasty café onto the plethora of festivities. Pure bliss! And a common occurrence in Lviv.
The restaurant/cafe culture is so famed within the city that some particularly high-quality or standout places have become a tourist attraction in their own right.
Fascinating places such as the mysterious house of legends that is known as Kryivka, Dyzga which is an art gallery and café, the Gosova Lampa pub-museum, and the thematic café, Masoch.
Consider adding some of these marvelous places to your must-see list when in Lviv.
And we can’t forget about the huge Christmas fair that is held in the heart of the Lviv city center, with the main events taking place around the market square.

The Pirogovo museum is by far one of the most popular places to visit in Kiev. Somewhat unique, it is an open-door museum that works to recreate the living conditions and day to day life of medieval Ukraine.
Every year, a Malenitsa carnival is held within the museum. Malenitsa, otherwise known as butter week, is an ancient Slavic holiday.
In our modern times, Malenitsa is celebrated on the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Easter.
You could even say that the Malenitsa carnival is a farewell to the winter season!
The tasty pancakes, prepared with traditional recipes, on sale during the festivities are just another reason to take part!

]]>But with the turbulent linguistic past, they simply haven’t yet had the opportunity to effectively incorporate any other language over a wide scope.
As you probably already guessed, the official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian, but here’s the twist!
Russian is practically the second (but not official) language of the country.
Razumkov Center poll undertaken in early 2017 suggests that 68% have taken Ukrainian as their only language, with 13% stating Russian as their preferred choice.
Though it seems that the numbers seem to be largely skewed towards the use of Ukrainian this has been shown to depend largely on the varying Regions of Ukraine with the biggest discrepancy being recorded between Western Ukraine (92.8%) and Eastern Ukraine (36.1%) or the Donbas region (27.4%.)
English is not particularly at the forefront of Ukrainian school’s curriculums.
There is, however, an increasing interest in English among the younger generations due to the prospects it so often brings and its presence within popular media.
With up to 20% of Ukrainians citing a proficient level in English, it’s only natural that the percentage would be higher for those within cities.
But don’t expect the older generations to be able to understand your every word!
Most will simply know the basics. So, if you must speak in English, make sure you do so slowly and clearly.
Keep in mind that the level of English will also diminish as you head out farther away from the bigger cities of Ukraine.

If you are an English speaker who wishes to travel to Kiev to explore all it has to offer, it’s only natural that you’d be inquisitive about the standard of English spoken here.
Especially if you have no grasp of either of the two most popular languages in the city.
The prospect of trying to find a way around a country with an entirely different writing system can be enough to make anyone sweat.
Fortunately, for you, many of Kiev’s inhabitants will be able to understand your inquiries, however, they may struggle to respond.
A little bit of patience will go a long way towards a smooth and easy stay in Kiev through English.
You may find some signs, leaflets, notices and most restaurants/cafés menus with English translations.
You’ll also find plenty of tour guides around the city that will be delighted to help you explore Ukraine by acting as a translator between you and the inner world of Kiev.
Feel free to contact me if you are planning to visit Ukraine, and I will be your own personal guide in Kiev!
It’s not a surprise that there is some contention in Ukraine over the two main spoken languages (Ukrainian and Russian).
This can be put down to the history that both Ukraine and Russia share.
Not to mention how alike the two languages are with some studies citing the languages as being 90% similar.
You’ll find a mix & match of both languages throughout Kiev. There’s also a spattering of minority languages that can be heard in some cities in such as Romanian, Polish, and Hungarian.

Perhaps the idea of diving into one of the aforementioned languages has now popped into your head.
Why not?
Even if you learn a few essential sentences your journey will be a lot more pleasurable and satisfying.
It’s then only natural to wonder which language is the easier to learn of the two. The truth is that there isn’t a great deal of difference.
With both languages being of Slavic origin, they are composed of similar grammar and vocabulary.
It is true, however, that many English speakers that opt to learn both Ukrainian and Russian languages have found Russian pronunciation to be somewhat more of a challenge.
Both languages also use the same writing systems knows as Cyrillic, so the task of learning an entirely new alphabet is equally challenging for both languages.
Without a doubt, the best way for anyone to traverse Kiev without knowing either of the popular languages is to hire a personal tour guide.
A professional tour guide will delightfully facilitate your travels throughout the city.
If this isn’t an option for you, your best bet is to keep your English simple and to the point.
Don’t give up if you don’t get the answer you are looking for the first time. Remain polite and understanding and others will help you.
Kiev is a welcoming city that will be delighted to help you find your way as long as you ask.
Consider downloading an easy access downloadable app that will allow you to translate those tricky sentences.
The moral of the story is that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help through English if strictly necessary – you’ll always find someone with a sufficient level of English to help you.
Despite this, it’s highly recommendable that you make an attempt to learn the basics of either of the two languages (Ukrainian or Russian), not only as a sign of respect but for your own safety and ease-of-mind.
Consider hiring a personal guide to bypass any problems that may arise due to differences in language.
Not only will this improve your trip immensely but will give you the real authentic experience of Kiev.
See you in Kiev

I love to travel. Learning about new cultures is one way to experience the world, but immersing yourself in the day to day life is even better.
One of the biggest questions I have when visiting a new place, is what their service policies are, especially regarding tipping.
A question frequently asked of me is:
Do people tip in Ukraine?
The answer is yes, for some things they do tip in Ukraine! And this is how it is handled.
Service-based jobs are everywhere. From taxi drivers to restaurants and bars, there is generally someone working to make sure that your needs are being met.
In some places, it is not expected or customary to tip, as wages pay workers fairly, without an expectation of additional income.
In Ukraine, we pay workers fair wages, but tips are appreciated for exemplary service.
In my travels, I have found a number of different customs, with tipping expectations that can vary wildly.
In some places tipping is not expected at all, while in other it is a must like some sort of unspoken tax!
In Ukraine, things are handled a bit differently, which I’ll share with you.
Customary tipping in restaurants is in the 5-15% range.
Some form of tip is expected when you have received good service, and I recommend this as a courtesy wherever you eat.
There is less of an expectation to tip in bars, however following restaurant guidelines are always a good rule of thumb, and generally appreciated.
Some prefer to tip by drink, while others go with a percentage on the overall tab.
Whatever you are comfortable with is fine, but tipping 10% is a nice gesture when you’ve had a good drink, especially one that was recommended.

If a tip jar is available, extra change or some spare hryvnia are always welcome.
Tipping at these kinds of establishments is generally not expected, though appreciated.
Coat check isn’t as common a practice in Ukraine, however higher end restaurants might have the service available.
It’s okay to offer some small bills, should you take advantage; generally enough for a cup of coffee or tea is fine.
Tipping in taxis throughout Kiev is generally not expected, though rounding up your fare is always a nice gesture.
Tips are typically only given for exemplary service, advice, or when the driver goes above and beyond to make your ride as best as possible.
One reason to tip a driver would be if they have helped with heavy luggage.
Tipping in hotels is not expected.
If you have had a good stay, many establishments appreciate positive reviews on Trip Advisor, or similar sites which will encourage others to book there in the future.
These services are incredibly popular in Ukraine, from mineral springs to deeply cleansing mud treatments and the like.
Tipping for these services is standard, around 10% of your total cost. This amount can be given to the therapist or specialist directly, or added to your total bill at reception.
Tour guides are dedicated and passionate about what they do, and sharing the best of their city with visitors.
For their time and dedication, 300-400 hryvnia is a nice tip, equalling $15-20 USD, especially if the tour has been extensive and lasted throughout the day.
Small bills are best for tips, as you can easily share the specified amount without needing change.
It is wise to keep these on you, and try to utilize a card for other, larger purchases.
It is rare for establishments in Ukraine to have a place for you to fill out a tipping amount.
Booking a tour company is a great way to the city, and explore new places with well trained eyes.
I love to share our favorite parts of the city with those eager to hear of our history and what makes us shine as a city.
For my tourists, I have excellent recommendations for good places to eat, where to shop, and other important sights to see.
I am always happy to help you navigate local scene of Kiev, and offer other advice like where pharmacies or even seamstresses might be located!

When in doubt, ask!
If you have received excellent service and wish to thank the person who helped you, it is okay to offer a tip in gratitude, even if it is not customary.
If the recipient is uncomfortable receiving this form of thanks, know that your intent was received well.
Kindness should be your ultimate focus and guiding line when traveling.
Your experience in a new place can be positive when you are determined to appreciate the best of what that country has to offer.
From a smile to a “spasybi” (thank you!) polite interactions reflect well on you and your home, though saying thank you with cash won’t typically do you wrong.
I am passionate about helping you have a wonderful time while visiting Kiev, and would be happy to help you navigate the city while learning some of the ways we live and celebrate life!
Certified tour guides know history, culture, and customs regarding how things work, and where you should go to experience the best we have to offer.

With all that’s been happening in the news with the conflict in Crimean, and US President Donald Trump, and the fact that Ukraine is still a fairly recent democracy, it’s reasonable to assume that there might be some myths and misconceptions lurking about Ukraine and Ukrainian people.
Ukrainians are very friendly hospitable people, but a little bit shy at first!
It might be easy to assume that Ukrainian people are somehow warlike and hostile because of Russia’s recent military actions in Crimea.
Because of the historical connection between these two countries, it is easy to assume that Ukrainians are ultra-nationalist when, in reality, recent elections indicate that most Ukrainians voters are social-democrats who lean politically left of center.
Are Ukrainians politically corrupt with a bankrupt education system?
Myths such as these have roots in Ukraine’s Soviet past, but the reality is that Ukraine holds free and fair elections and boasts a strong education system.
Recent statistics indicate that the country ranks fourth highest in the number of higher education degrees per capita.
Higher education in Ukraine is meeting the demands of an increasingly tech-centered workforce by providing professional education and training.
Ukrainian culture is more closely related to Western European culture than one might assume.
With a continental climate — cold winters and hot summers — Ukrainians are extremely passionate about sport and take advantage of the season to play everything from water polo to snow skiing.
Ukrainian people have a rich history and culture that is evident in the architecture, arts, and food.

Ukraine is a very friendly country. We welcome guests with open arms and love to share our culture.
The average Ukrainian citizen lives their life one day at a time working a job, going to school, and raising a family in peace. We love to spend time in nature and indoors watching television/cinema or going to the opera.
Ukrainians love to eat, and mealtime is a chance to talk and laugh and catch up with each other — the more, the merrier. Ukraine plays host to millions of tourists every year.
Tourists from all over the world come into the capital of Kiev, and once they’re here, they find the exchange rate to be a welcome reprieve from many of the high-priced cities of Western Europe.

As the capital of Ukraine, Kiev is the epicenter of art, politics, and culture. Kiev is a beautiful city that displays the rich, multicultural heritage of the Ukrainian people in its architecture.
The people here love the city and are proud to be citizens of the capital city.
Ukraine’s connection to its ultra-conservative Soviet past is all-but disintegrated. With many young people, specifically young women, gaining university degrees and access to Western music, culture, media and ideas freely flowing since the early nineties, Kiev has become a mecca for younger citizens.
There plenty of coffee houses, restaurants, and bars, as well as nightclubs in Kiev. There’s something for everyone here.
While Kiev has the breathtaking vistas and all the trappings of a major city, it retains some smalltown appeal. The people here are very in-tune with nature and understand the need to preserve the health and biodiversity of their cities.
Billed as “The Green City,” Kiev boasts a veritable forest-worth of trees tucked between buildings and along the avenues. These trees offer citizens and tourists alike a shady reprieve from the warm spring showers and hot summer sun.
The greenery and broad walkways invite people to come outside and help to promote the active lifestyle of Kiev’s citizens.
The initial draw for many tourists may be the fantastic feast for the eyes provided in the architecture and natural marvels in the city or, perhaps they just can’t get over how inexpensive it is, but they stay for the food.
For the most part, you’ll find fairly healthy food in Kiev. From paska—a whimsical Easter bread—to borsht—a type of beetroot soup served hot to the enjoyment of meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, the food culture of Kiev is vibrant, warm, and inviting.
The food of Ukraine finds its roots, like many others, in a peasant-tradition, and its true beauty is in its simple homey ingredients that make tourists feel right at home.
Picture, for dinner, Chicken Kiev served with a fresh garden salad as the main course, a breaded and baked chicken recipe that is a staple in Ukrainian restaurants and is guaranteed to make your mouth water.
For an appetizer, varenyky, or pirogi. Much like the pierogi of Poland, varenyky are traditionally filled with a mashed-potato mixture but can come with anything from cottage cheese to strawberries. And, for dessert, a classic Ukrainian dish of walnut-stuffed prunes—this dish so deliciously uncomplicated and, there’s something about softened prunes and crunchy walnuts covered in sweet and condensed milk that brings all Ukrainians back to their childhood.

If you haven’t fallen into a food-coma and you aren’t too tired from your sightseeing tour, you might find yourself back in the hotel or hostel, or maybe at a bar enjoying something on the TV.
Ukrainians, much like any other nation, enjoy a healthy amount of television.
We get our news from the TV, we watch sports on TV, and our current president once starred on a television program in which he played a dramatized version of the modern, anti-corruption president that he is in real life.
The national sport of Ukraine is football or, as they say in the US, soccer, but we have a passion for many different sports.
Ukrainians have had a long tradition of Olympic competition and have brought home a total of thirty-five gold medals in sports like gymnastics, boxing, shooting, wrestling, sailing, and rowing, to name a few.
Since the days of Soviet control, Ukraine has produced incredible basketball players, and in 1992 Ukraine formed its own professional basketball association called SuperLeague.
The national team made it into the FIBA World Cup in 2014 and performed admirably, and they’ve qualified once again in 2019.
We’re hoping for a big win! And we hope you’ll come and see for yourself.
Just get in touch with me to schedule your own personal guided tour of Kiev.
