The underground caves of Kiev are an exciting part of the cultural and tourism circuit. As a historical landmark, they attract large numbers of tourists as well as religious pilgrims throughout the seasons.

I have occasionally heard some people refer to them as the Orthodox Disneyland. Others consider these caves as the seventh wonder of Ukraine.

Generally, the exploration of these sites requires the services of a professional tour guide. They can provide invaluable information based on both history and architecture. A typical tour to the caves takes about an hour.

Then again, the caves, such as those of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, are tourist-friendly. They come with signs and clear pathways to make the exploration easier for visitors.

Brief Facts About the Underground Caves

There is a rich history behind the caves. This is how it goes. The architectural masterpieces consist of a monastery with underground churches that have been in existence since the 11th century.

The caves are of two distinct types. The Near caves are at the famous site of the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, also known as the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and, associated with St. Antony. The Far Caves, on the other hand, are associated with St. Theodosius.

The earliest of these caves and catacombs were for two primary purposes; as a monastery, and burial places for the monks. Later on, partitions were created to make room for domestic household and religious items.

More passages came into being during the soviet era, and the reason for this was to create a secure way to access certain parts of the city without being noticed.

Some of the grand monuments accompanying these architectural ensembles include the Dormition Cathedral and the Trinity Gate church. Other surface churches are the St. Anthony of the Near Caves and St. Theodosius of the Far Caves.

How to Explore the Underground Caves?

Now, it isn’t very easy to explore these caves on your own, especially if you are a first-time visitor. Therefore, you need a professional tour guide to take you along the underground routes and bring you back to the surface safely.

The good news though, is that since I have been doing this for years, you are definitely in safe hands. I also guide on the type of useful tools to carry along. These include a flashlight and spare clothes to change.

Also, ensure that the clothes are practical enough to allow you to navigate the tunnels. I always recommend comfortable, warm, and even waterproof clothing for this purpose. You might quickly find how cold and wet it can sometimes get, so it’s good to come fully prepared. I would take it applies mostly to the Far caves.

The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, on the other hand, is more visitor-friendly, and you can explore any time of day and irrespective of change in weather. This is because, over the years, there have been infrastructural adjustments to allow for better maneuvering.

What Are the Dos and Don’ts?

The exploration comes with specific dos and don’ts. So here are some of the tips I can provide:

  • This is a religious site, so you need to observe the dress code, especially if you are female.
  • You can wear long skirts, and the best way is to wear them over your regular clothes. The best thing is you can secure one at the entrance if you did not carry yours. You might, of course, be asking why the restriction. Well, it’s mostly as a sign of respect for the holy place.
  • Another vital gear is the headscarf, and you can purchase it from the babushkas hawking them right outside the church. You may need to buy a candle too if yours is a religious tour.
  • But I must also warn you that cameras are not allowed into the place, so in actual sense, you won’t be taking any pictures.
  • The best part of this excursion is that entrance is free.

What to Experience in The Underground Caves?

As already stated, the most famous site is the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. It’s one of the most revered places, seasoned with annual pilgrimages. I would say it remains an active monastery to date, welcoming all kinds of visitors, including non-Christians. The site offers both underground and surface explorations, leaving you with unforgettable experiences.

So what do you expect to see here? Some of the first things you notice are mummified bodies in glass caskets. Creepy, is it? Well, not so much as to say that there is absolute normality. There is a complete air of calm as well.

The biggest surprise, though, is that they are so well-preserved you would think they are of recent times. One of the reasons is that the type of climate and fresh air within the location helps to prevent decomposition.

Then, of course, there are places of worship and living quarters of the monks. You also see numerous relics of religious symbolism.

But the tour is not limited to the underground sanctuaries alone. Above the ground, you can explore such sites as the ruins and remnants of the Dormition Cathedral and the Holy Trinity church.

Other monuments around this spot include the Great Bell Tower and the All Saints church. Again, on the side, is the famous micro museum, which has a collection of awe-inspiring miniatures. You can only see these tiny collections using a microscope.

Conclusion

The underground caves are a distinct and unique landmark drawing thousands of visitors each year. These sacred sites appeal to visitors across the board, offering different perspectives. For example, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra allows you not just the view of the underground, but right above it, you can visit and view various monuments, as well as the magnificent Dnieper river.

The good news is that I can provide you with all the necessary guidelines, show you all the deeper parts of these sites, and so much more. Generally, both the underground and the upper surface of these sites is an experience you would never want to miss in your lifetime.

A guide on the ins and outs of personal tour guides in Kiev

Hiring a good tour guide in Kiev (or the best is you choose me!) is the best way to the experience the city in my opinion.

Mainly because of the knowledge only a citizen of Kiev can possess.

So the question is:

How to pick a good tour guide in Kiev?

First, you’ve got to look into exactly what type of trip you’d like to have.

Would you like a walking tour?

Cycling tour?

Maybe even a driven tour?

It’s all possible. Once you’ve decided upon your requirements, it’s then recommended that you look up suitable and reputable tour guide sites online.

Some of the best personal Kiev tour guides will have their own personal websites, so undertaking a thorough search is a must.

Decide which tour guides suit your requirements and compare them to each other. This can help immensely if you’re looking for a budget trip as competitive pricing is implemented in the tour industry.

Once you’ve found your perfect personal guide, all you have to do is contact them!

Whether it be through an agency or direct communication, you’ll have your tour planned in no time!

And make sure to go through this checklist:

Find if your Kiev guide has many good reviews on google, with genuine testimonies

Don’t look for one with perfect score!

Finding a service provider with a lot of reviews and perfect score might only be in script of the next Mission Impossible movies!

Ask if your guide is certified

Certification is not required for guiding service in Kiev (yet!), however if your Kiev guide is certified, then you know he or she has enough training and knowledge, needed for a great Kiev experience.

Look for outgoing personality

You can use the links they have to their social profiles and snoop around (in good faith!) looking, and just look for what gives you that feeling that your Kiev guide is an outgoing energetic person.

Look for a professional Kiev tour guide

Part time guides might have lower rates, but professional personal guides rates in Kiev area already affordable (at $10-$15 an hour), better not to ty trading another $5 for quality. Remember, no one wants to be treated like a part-time job!

How to pick a good tour guide in Kiev - Kiev tour guide

Why you need a personal tour guide in Kiev?

When traveling to a new country you can often feel like a brave explorer, off to discover new lands, cultures, and people.

This rings particularly true when Ukraine is your country of choice. Specifically its vibrant and inviting capital city – Kiev.

With its bustling nightlife, beautiful scenery, historical sites, delicious cuisine, and delightful people, you will not experience a single boring moment if you know how to navigate the city properly.

You may be thinking “Great! But how does one navigate the city exactly?”

Well, if it is your first time here there are apps and maps that can help you along your way, but they have a habit of leaving tourists underwhelmed and disappointed.

Set group tours are also available but you will find yourself being mainly led to tourist destinations while listening to a rehashed script of dates, facts, and not much more.

If you think you are left with no options now, you would be wrong!

There is always the option of hiring a personal guide in Kiev.

Why you need a personal tour guide in Kiev - Kiev tour guide

It is affordable

No need to recoil in horror!

Hiring a personal guide in Kiev will not bankrupt you by any means, in fact, it’s satisfyingly affordable at an average rate of $10-15 an hour.

That is almost an unbelievable price and too good to be missed!

Seriously, where else will you find someone willing to show you around an entire city with local knowledge and “behind-the-scenes” access for such a rate?

What traits should a personal guide have?

Speaking of local knowledge, it is a must if you want to really get the whole Kiev experience.

A personal guide in Kiev knows just where to go and the places where the true Kiev locals flock to. This is why it is essential that you hire a local guide with experience of the city (bonus points if they were born there).

You will not have to set foot inside a tourist trap, a good local guide wouldn’t dare let it happen!

Your Kiev tour guide will provide you with the chance to amble through the hidden gems of the beautiful city. And believe me, there are many of them.

Kiev is a city filled with marvelous nooks and crannies and wonders around every corner. Do not miss out on a single one with a personal tour guide as a beacon of light that will illuminate the city.

What traits should a personal guide have - Kiev tour guide

Personal guides are flexible and suitable for everyone!

You will not even have to worry about tour times. Not a morning person?

Do not worry, your tour guide can work around that. Afternoon tours are just as good as morning ones after all!

That is just another joy of hiring a personal tour guide, you can experience Kiev on your own terms and at all times.

Want to look into a specific aspect of Kiev?

Your tour guide has you covered. Whether it be history, food, or Kiev nightlife that you’re looking for, your Kiev tour guide can tailor your tour experience to suit you.

It’s clear then that a personal tour guide isn’t just for a few subsets of tourists but for every type of traveler.

Whether you’re only stopping over for a layby and have a few hours to spare or you’ve planned a long trip, a tour guide in Kiev can be of immense help to you.

You’ll get the most out of whatever hours you have and won’t leave Kiev disappointed no matter how many hours you spent there.

Tour guides are also perfect for solo, first-time travelers and people on business trips. Whatever your schedule, a good personal tour guide knows how to work around it.

Language won’t be a problem either!

It’s always tempting to think that English can get you by everywhere in the world, and it might be true to a certain extent but how much are you really getting out of your trip if you’re depending on other people’s levels of English?

Ukrainian and Russian are the predominant languages spoken in Kiev and you can count on your personal tour guide being fluent in them.

This will enrich your experience tenfold as you won’t have to use online translators that aren’t yet fully reliable. You’ll also gain peace of mind considering that you’ll be with someone who’s aware of what is being said around you.

Leading on from peace of mind, there is no underestimating the safety of having a personal tour guide in Kiev. Not that Kiev is a dangerous city, it can just simply be a bit overwhelming in a new place.

And if you’re somehow still not yet convinced that hiring a personal tour guide for your trip to Kiev is a must, you’ll find even more reasons When you read: Benefits of Hiring a Private Tour Guide in Kiev

Just like any other ATMs from around the world; Ukraine ATMs have their own withdrawal limits. These limits can differ and vary depending mainly on the type of your credit/debit card (Visa, Mastercard and etc.) and the bank that owns the ATM you are withdrawing from. ATM withdrawal limits in Ukraine can be on a per transaction basis, daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

On average Ukraine ATM Withdrawal Limits generally varies from Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH) 3,000 to 3,500 per withdraw.

Getting the exact amount of the ATM withdrawal limit is always tricky because your bank also has its own withdrawal, yet the Ukraine ATM withdrawal limits may take precedence over your own bank’s limits so it is important to plan ahead and have sufficient funds ahead of time.

If you find yourself withdrawing over the ATM withdrawal limits you can always try to transact in smaller amounts instead of withdrawing in one transaction.

How to locate ATMs in Kiev

Navigating a foreign city for the first time can be a challenge, even to the most seasoned of travelers and looking for a small ATM in a foreign city is even more challenging especially if you are trying to look for a safe and convenient place to withdraw cash. I always advice to withdraw cash from ATMs in Kiev downtown area, you can easily find them using these ATM locators:

Useful tip: To avoid paying extra charges, use only ATMs that match the same network of your card.

Other things to avoid when using ATMs in Ukraine or anywhere for that matter are scams!

These are couple of them:

Common ATM and credit card scams in Ukraine

ATM scams are common around the globe, especially in areas that are a hotspots for tourists.

These scams can be as simple as a card skimming or as sophisticated as a completely fake ATM machine that can trick even the most careful of travelers. And yes, the last one really did happen before!

These are couple of frauds and ATM scams to keep an eye for when traveling to Ukraine (or anywhere!):

ATM Skimming

Probably the most common ATM scam in the world and anyone can be an unwary victim!

The scammers use a device called “card skimmer” and illegally install it on a legitimate ATM machine. The device then collects and records data from users cards. More complicated skimmers include an additional video recording device also secretly installed near the keypad to record the pin. Tourists often fall prey to this scam because they are unfamiliar with what a local ATM in Ukraine should look like, and might miss to notice that something is wrong.

Good Samaritan ATM Scam

So your busy figuring out how to use the ATM that probably looks unfamiliar to you and holding back a line of other people waiting to use the machine. You fidget and panic and then someone from the crowd approaches you and pretends to help you with the ATM and unsuspectingly skims your card and observes your pin number or if he doesn’t have a skimming device most likely the criminal will ask for a small amount as a reward for helping you out with the ATM if you refuse, he might go all the way to distract you and swipe your wallet altogether.

Broken ATM Scam

This Scam will really get you off-guard, it is designed to send you in a panic. Ot works by putting glue in the card slot or money dispenser.

The concepts is as follows; after you enter your pin and withdraw the funds the ATM will fail to dispense because the card is stuck in the card slot and when you’re panicking on why the card won’t come out, someone will approach you and pretend to help, by telling you to ask for help (going to a nearby bank or something) meanwhile, the scammer will reassure you that he will stay infront of the ATM to look after your card (which is stuck inside). Once you are off for help, he simply just tug the card out and the money will dispense and when you come back, the scammer will be long gone together with your money and your card.

The Fake ATM Scam

The ultimate mother of all ATM scams in Ukraine and probably the whole world is the fake ATM scam!

If you’re not familiar with what a local ATM is supposed to look then chances are, you’ll never know that you’re transacting with a fake ATM. These Fake ATMs often pop-up in places that are frequently visited by tourists. The ATM looks so real that it might even fool some locals.

The good news is this scam has been defeated, and prevented from re-occurring with serious security majors once it was discovered and reported. So, one less scam to lookout for!

How to avoid ATM and credit cards scams when visiting Ukraine

You have to accept that no matter how safe or welcoming a city is there will always be criminals trying their best to swindle you from your hard-earned money. And scammers will never stop coming up with complex scams that at some point you willingly give your money away!

So, beside vigilant, here are couple of things to do to avoid ATM and credit card scams in Ukraine:

Make sure to plan ahead

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, or in this case plan to be scammed!

Always map out your itinerary and route ahead and determine which place is safe to withdraw funds. Using the official atm locators from the official websites of local banks will help you avoid using the dreaded fake ATMs.

Always, always inspect the ATM machine before using!

Lightly tug on the card slot to see if it is securely in place and not just taped over and also physically inspect the cash dispenser. Always inspect the ATM machine before using. Look for hastily added cameras especially on top of the keypad. Most ATM’s are constructed cleanly and neatly and do not have exposed wires or modules outside its metal shell. As an added precaution always cover the keypad with your hands when you are entering your pin.

Always be mindful of your surroundings

If someone is approaching you or is just casually loitering near the ATM. Walk away and find another ATM that is more prominent.

Use ATMs in Banks as much as possible

The best way to avoid ATM scams is to use the ATMs that are in the banks themselves. Most shopping malls have banks inside to looking for it won’t be a problem if you are in a shopping wall. If you are away from the city, always use the ATM in a Bank Branch.

I think you agree that traveling abroad with too much cash on hand is not the best of ideas!

And since ATMs are practically everywhere nowadays, and are always easy and convenient to use allowing you to quickly and safely withdraw your funds from anywhere in the world, it would be better to keep your trip budget on your credit/debit card, while keeping decent cash reserve on hand.

Kiev nightlife is an amazing adventure awaiting you to experience. It is the perfect blend of Ukrainian culture, vibrant Kiev lifestyle and bright tradition of Ukrainian friendliness.

Fun Guide to Enjoy The Glamourous Kiev Nightlife Experience

Without a doubt, Kiev is a treasure for tourists, as it offers beautiful cityscapes, restaurants, historical and architectural monuments. However, its main attraction is the Kiev nightlife, and it is attracting millions of tourists each year to the city.

There is a Nightlife Party in Kiev for Every Taste & Budget

Nightlife in Kiev is not a “one size fits all”, but a mixture of many tastes.

There are wide selections for nightlife events, from glamourous to more frugal Kiev night clubs, disco to beach clubs and even after party clubs. Wow! They go on until early in the morning to the next day’s afternoon.

Winter is Coming & Kiev is Partying!

Despite the cooler winter climate in Kiev, this non-stop, magnificent party capital can offer blood warming evenings and entertainment thanks to wide range of discos, night clubs and bars of all kinds and themes.

Ukrainians are very friendly, love to have fun and party hard until the morning. The last is a tradition brightly reflected by the never-ending, fantastic parties of Kiev Nightlife.

You can make new friends while partying and enjoying Kiev nightlife. Clubs and bars are great place to meet beautiful, sexy Ukrainian women.

Elegant, glamourous, and stylishly dressed, the friendly ladies of Kiev are pleasant company. Remember to keep it classy and approach with friendly smile.

Arena City, Heart of Kiev Nightlife

Kiev loves to party, and Arena City is a great place to start.

Due to its central location just next to the historic Bessarabska Square, Arena City Kiev is one of the most visited places by tourists.

It is the largest entertainment complex in Kiev and is the honorary capital of fun, party and Kiev nightlife.

Inside Arena City, there are some of the most famous Kiev night clubs, bars, restaurants, shops, and strip clubs.

I recommend you come to Arena City early in the day, experience the best food outlets, have dinner, and then some fun in a club or where ever you like to hang around overnight, party, and dance!

  • Address: Baseina St, 2a, Kiev.
  • Standard working hours, depending on the facility.

SkyBar is not just a night club with a dance floor. It also has a restaurant, fancy lounge, and a beautiful terrace overlooking the city center.

SkyBar Club Kiev

CHI Club

CHI works as night club only twice a week (Friday and Saturday), for the rest of the week it’s open as a restaurant.

Within a few months, CHI managed to establish itself as a prime Kiev nightlife destination. It became known as the fancy VIP nightclub and restaurant in Kiev, mostly attracting wealthy clients.

Prices are on the high side compared to other night clubs in Kiev. Nevertheless, it’s always busy on weekends, and getting inside might be very, very difficult!

The bar at CHI serves great cocktails, and the music played in the club is enjoyable. Most often the music is played by famous international DJs, and goes back and forth between house and trance music.

Dress code is formal at CHI!

Even if you reserve a table and make a deposit, it doesn’t mean that you will pass dress code if you chose not to dress up. So, a word of advice: suit up!

CHI is THE hook up place, as the ladies there stylish and glamorous, and quite sophisticated.

As experienced tour guide in Kiev, I would highly recommend you go there. And as your nightlife tour guide, your chances of enjoying good evening at CHI will octuple!

  • Address: Parkova Doroga St, 16 A, Kiev.
  • Standard working hours: Friday & Saturday, from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am.
CHI nightclub and restaurant

D.Fleur Club

Not far from the Dynamo Stadium, D.Fleur is one of the most famous night clubs in Kiev.

Interior design and decoration are an elegant feast for the eyes, spread out over three floors.

The ground floor is a restaurant and lounge bar area, where you can have a drink, initiate and enjoy some conversation.

If you feel like dancing afterward, just go up to the next floor where the main dance floor is located. There is a balcony on the upper level with a good view of the dance floor.

The music played at D.Fleur is not exclusive to a genre or style. Usually recent popular songs are played. Special party events are also organized from time to time.

Prices are between mid-range to expensive compared to the average pricing policy of Kiev night clubs.

There is an X factor making this club trendy among locals and especially popular with women. It is easy to find yourself dancing in the midst of beautiful women!

Dress code is less formal. Just the standard dress code.

So, what do you think?

Should I include this when I plan your Kiev nightlife tour for you?

  • Address: Mykhaila Hrushevskoho St, 3, Kiev.
  • Standard working hours: Thursday to Saturday, from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
D.Fleur Club

Caribbean Club

As the name suggests, the club plays mainly Latin music, with trance and RnB music also played depending on the night’s program.

Caribbean Club’s diverse and vibrant atmosphere attracts both locals and tourists. Special shows including live music and exotic dancers are quite common.

Maintaining this atmosphere helped maintain the club’s popularity, especially with women between 25-35 years, making it a great meet-up place.

Prices for table reservations and drinks are reasonable.

ID checks as well as the dress code are relaxed. So, feel free to walk-in with confidence.

  • Address: Symona Petlyury St, 4, Kiev.
  • Standard working hours: Wednesday to Saturday, from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
Caribbean Club

Heaven Club

Located at the heart of Kiev and gaining more popularity every day.

Heaven Club is well known not only as a night club, but also sensational after party club where partygoers can continue partying through the night until the next day.

The club is often full around 3:00 am and on some occasions can remain open until noon!

When other Kiev night clubs close, the party moves to Heaven Club. Why not follow it?

ID check is there to keep the troublemakers away, and dress code is relaxed.

  • Address: Borysa Hrinchenka St, 7, Kiev.
  • Standard working hours: Friday and Saturday, from 12:00 am to 10:00 am.
Heaven Club

Forsage Club

Forsage’s youthful vibe makes it popular among university students and youth in Kiev. The average age of the goers is something between 18-24 years.

Friday and Saturday are the best time to join the party.

Some tourists find Forsage Club amusing and tend to pay it more than one visit.

The club occupies three floors, each of which plays a different type of music.

Prices are low. Reserving a table with a minimum deposit for drinks will cost up to $30.

Forsage’s advantage is its own disadvantage. It is a student-oriented club and comes with all the issues and difficulties associated that.

  • Address: Harmatna St, 51 A, Kiev.
  • Standard working hours: Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 6.00, Friday from 10:00 at 7:00, Saturday from 18:00 at 7:00, Sunday from 18:00 at 6:00.
Forsage Club

Indigo Club

Not far from Kiev central train station, is the elegant Indigo night club.

The complex consists of restaurant, karaoke, lounge bar and a dance floor.

Morning to afternoon the club operates as a restaurant, and then shifts to work as a bar. After 10:00 pm the night club is up and running.

This post is written by a traveler and a friend, who has visited Kiev from Australia, and has been kind enough to share his thoughts and experience, so thanks you Traveler Hints!

My thoughts on Kiev

Beautiful Kiev City, located in Ukraine is the best city to visit in Europe. Unluckily nobody seems to know it. This is not only the best city but also one of the most beautiful, attractive and flashingly enticing cities.

In it, you are able to witness, traces of medieval period, and communist brutalism coupled with classical central European architecture with boulevards and cobbled side streets.

This city enjoys the grace of nature with its lush green vegetation and this city is one of the best cities I have ever visited in all my life. Hard it is, to walk without going past picturesque parks if you chose to do so.

The breathtaking spectacular, charming river the  Dnipro meanders through the middle of the city nurturing a series of Islands in the centre of Kiev.

Seemingly endless woodlands and sandy beaches with recreation areas are in the heart of the city. Oh mate, it was really an awesome experience!

Kiev, indeed, is a conservative place with Western style. However, you are able to see belles in short skirts. They display the ever so sexy glamour which you could see in the whole of Ukraine.

This, though not sightseeing, is a smashing, eye-catching attraction to you if you ever tread upon this glamorous city.

Wherever you look you will find traditional gender roles. The tendency is that the Ukrainian girls look for their ‘Mr. Right’ to make a family, which throughout their lives, becomes really, really important.

In fact. Ukraine is infested with poverty and as a result, any woman would genuinely tell you of the absence of enough, eligible partners for them to find amongst the ‘bachelor boys’.

Friendliness and helpfulness of the people are to be appreciated here in Ukraine and in Kiev city at large.

This, indeed, is an attractive quality among the younger generation who has a tendency to speak English for they fervently try to master the language.

Despite their effort to conquer the language barrier, there still seem to be a situation in which the language problem appears to be a real problem.

But, mate it is not a problem at all, your friendly tour girl Alexandra will escort you around the city, yeah, everywhere possible for she knows where true attractions are and you will prefer her company more than any guide on your visit.

That is to say, your fulfillment of every expectation you had to achieve will be well addressed. This, for sure, will make your tour more than a mere success.

So, you guys should capitalise on this great opportunity and make much of your visit.

As a person with first hand experience I assure you of the ability to make the best use of your visit to this wonderful city – Kiev.

Also Alexandra will adjust herself to your needs of touring. For sure, you will find your tour arrangements catered to your best of interest.

It could very well be a half a day tour, a day tour, a 2 days’ tour or a 3 days’ tour or else it could very well be a nightlife tour around Kiev City, Ukraine.

Planning my tour with Alexandra

If you like, you can trust Alexandra to arrange your flat/ hotel stay and airport pickup during your stay in Kiev.

Her knowledge of the city allows me to be a good judge when it comes to choosing good hotels, hostels and hotel-type private apartments for any budget.

Alexandra herself and very friendly smiley driver will pick visitors up and will drive you in a private car to your place of stay and assist you with orientation.

Top places we visited in Kiev

Ukraine Aviation Museum

The Ukraine State Aviation Museum (museum of planes) offers a marvelous collection of Soviet built aircraft’s.

Even if you are not interested in aviation this is still a great place to visit. Kiev is home to the Antonov Design Bureau.

You will see rare Antonov types on display. There are plenty of examples from the other builders as well.

Tupolevs, Ilyushins, Sukhois, Yakovlevs, MiGs  range and more besides these. The entrance fee is very reasonable and you have to pay a little extra to take photographs. There are no inside exhibits. Everything is outside.

Andrew’s Descent

Andrew’s Descent (Andreevsky Decent) is one of the oldest and most popular streets in Kiev.

Independence Square

Maidan, or independence square is the central square in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It is one of the city’s main squares. It is located on Khreshchatyk street in shevchenko Raion.

The square has been known under many names, but it is simply called Maidan (square).

Independence Square

St. Sophia’s Cathedral

St. Sophia’s Cathedral is the world famous historical and architectural monument of the first half of the 11th century.

The name of the cathedral comes from the Greek word ‘Sofia’ which means wisdom. Built in the times of Yaroslav Mudry, the cathedral served as a social, political and cultural centre of Kievan Rus, where foreign ambassadors were received.

Chronicles were recorded and the first Russian library founded by Yaroslav Mudry himself functioned.

Yaroslav Mudry’s ruling was the time when art, education and culture prospered.

Kiev sightseeing

St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral

The sky blue St. Michael’s Cathedral with its fabulously shining domes, is one of the most beautiful and important Orthodox temples in Ukraine.

Built in the 90s it is a remake of the destroyed St. Michael’s Cathedral, which stood in the territory of the oldest monastery of Kievan Rus for over eight centuries.

The grandson of  Yaroslav the wise, prince Sviatopolk founded the cathedral in the early 12th century.

It is named in honour or St.Michael – the protector of  kyiv. Its nickname ‘the golden – domed’ cathedral, comes from the fact that it was the first and only church with such extravagant domes in ancient Rus.

Byzantine, master architects participated in the Cathedral’s construction. Yet, elements of Ukrainian architectural style also come through clearly. At the same time the cathedral was built smaller buildings also sprung up around it.

The church became the most honoured religious  monument among the residents of Kiev. Its importance grew in 1108 after it got its main shrine – the relics of St. Barbara, brought to Kiev from Constantinople.

Since the original Cathedral was destroyed  these relics have been kept in St. Volodymyr’s in Kiev.

Kiev sightseeing

St Andrew’s Church

Rare in its beauty and grace, the St. Andrew’s Church, stands on a hill in the historic center of Kyiv. It is one of the most famous Orthodox temples in the capital of Ukraine.

This amazing construction, rightfully considered to be a real work of art, is among the most remarkable of the city’s landmarks.

Kiev sightseeing

It stretches from the European Square (northeast) through the Maidan and to Bessarabska Square (southwest) where the Besarabsky Market is located.

Along the street are the offices of the Kiev City Council which contains both the city’s council and the state administration, the Main Post Office, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Committee of Television and Radio Broadcasting, the Central Department Store (TSUM), the Bessarabka Market, the Ukrainian House, and others.

The museum was opened on the day of the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor in 2008.

It also gained the status of a national museum in 2010. The museum is located on the Pechersk Hills on the right bank of the Dnieper river in Kiev, adjacent to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

National Museum

Landscape Alley

There is a place in the center of Kyiv, which is hidden from the crowded streets and by houses from one side.

It is pleasant to the eye by the breathtaking view of historic Kyiv and the mighty Dnieper from the other.

Kiev sightseeing

It is the Landscape alley which has become the stamping ground for Kyiv residents and the most exciting place for the tourists who are keen on walking itinerary.

Alley is located on the Old Kyiv Hill, which was in the centre of ancient Kyiv long ago. Today, when walking along the Ukrainian capital, turn off from the crowded Velyka ZhytomyrskaStreet to the stone arch.

There you will find yourself back in the world of childhood, fairytale and imagination. On the one hand you get a magnificent view on Podil, Dnieper River and Castle Hill (Zamkova Hora).
