]]>In this article, I am sharing with you the vibrant world of active tourism in Kiev and the great adventures awaiting you in this amazing city, many of which I have experienced it myself.
Kiev is not only the capital of Ukraine but also the undisputed capital of fun and adventure of Ukraine, and maybe in all of Eastern Europe.
There are countless activities you can enjoy in Kiev from investigating the underground city in Kiev, jet skiing, fly a plane, to skydiving and shooting military grade weapons. There are no limits to the adventures you can experience in Kiev. You can even drive a tank if you want to… a tank!
If you do not mind expanding your horizons beyond city limits, step outside a few miles to a treasure of activities surrounding Kiev that takes advantage of the region’s colorful terrain, forests, rivers, lakes, hills, and spectacular nature around Kiev, making for the perfect backdrop for fun adventure.
Buckle up, and let’s explore together what amazing adventures Kiev has to offer.
When it comes to flying, nothing can top a hot air balloons. The ride is both an adventure and a romantic experience. Regardless of whether you are afraid of heights or not, there will be a moment when you will feel at peace, that sensation follows the first adrenaline rush, and replace it with calmness and even happiness as the balloon gently elevates.

If you came during cooler weather, do not be surprised when you feel the need to take off your jacket. Thanks to the burner above, it can get hot inside the basket sometimes!
In case you’ve never experienced it, I advise you to take the chance and fly over Kiev in a balloon. After all, it is on everyone’s bucket list!
I am sure you will appreciate the panoramic view of the forests, rivers, and skyline over the city. This adventure is good for solo travelers as well as for couples, families, and friends. Hot air balloons require clear weather, so make sure to plan your trip to Kiev accordingly if you would like to add it to your to-do-list. Check out my article about Kiev weather and what activities you can enjoy during each season. There is always something to do in Kiev for every day of the year.
Flying in early winter is possible, under specific conditions, but it would be better to plan your trip during spring/summer season, for both safety reasons and to enjoy a better view in warmer weather. Balloons are delicate and they require good weather. Even during clear days, there are no guarantees that you will go up, until you go up!
Don’t be disappointed if the ride is postponed, due to weather conditions. Unfortunately, it is something beyond your control. Even so, the ride will deserve the wait. Expect a full refund if you paid in advance.
Ukraine has number of associations and balloons clubs whose members fly as hobbyists. Many are licensed professionals. So, if you are booking this ride online make sure to check and double check the provider, and his/her reputation and safety record to guarantee a pleasant experience.
Kiev Ballooning Society is one that provides many options that includes romantic flights, balloon racing, and even balloon pilot training.
The cost depends on flight duration and number of passengers in the basket. For a 30 minute flight with only two passengers, expect to pay around $80 – $90 per person. The price per person should drop as the total number of passengers increase.
If you need my help with booking a hot air balloon flight, let me know!
We had snowboards, skateboards, and now it is FlyBoard time!
Flyboards are fun mixture of air and water that the little child inside you will tempt you to experience. Kiev offers you this unique experience in selected places along the Dnieper River.

Just allow your fantasy to lead the way as there are no limits to what you can do with it. Just imagine all the acrobatic tricks you can perform. That will be an amazing video to share with family and friends
It is amazing how you can go up to 5 meters (~16 ft.) on only water pressure. There will be 5-10 minutes of instruction about the device, safety, and how to control it before you are allowed to fly it over the river.
Riding a flyboard for 10 minutes in Kiev will cost $35 on average. Generally, they are unique, addictive, and simply fun!
Kiev has an amazing countryside that’s worth exploring, and what better way to do so than on an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle)!

I discovered the joy of ATV riding for the first time in Egypt of all places. Yes, I had to find out that I liked it on another continent! Naturally, I sought continuation of the experience and found out about how the colorful terrain around Kiev, makes for exciting ATV rides that I often get to enjoy.
It feels like one of the best off-road adventures that you can go on as a group in Kiev. No licenses are required for ATVing, just a decent detailed instruction by a qualified professional instructor before he gives you the green light.
You will also be obligated to wear safety equipment to insure your safety during the ride. These protective gears will be given to you.
If you are not an experienced rider, or if you are trying ATV/quad bike for the first time, then you might need to read a little bit about it and watch some videos first.
It will be a good idea to spend the first 20-30 minutes on the beginners training field until you get a good grip on the handles.
Don’t get me wrong, ATVs, or quad bikes as some may call them, are great for a fun ride. However, if you are planning on going all in and explore the full potential of your ATV on the roughest of terrains (for example forest terrain), then do not fall for the illusion of safety given by the four wheels on the ATV. It can be more challenging to ride than a dirt bike, which is a plus for many experienced riders!
Renting an ATV in Kiev is very affordable. Renting one for an entire hour can be as low as $15. Make sure to ask about guided ATV tours; they will take you to interesting hidden parts of Kiev’s countryside.
Maybe it is a primal thing, but there is something about firearms, that make shooting a gun a satisfying experience for many people. Of course as a sport in a safe environment, and not at people!

One of the most popular toys among kids (especially boys) are guns and pistols. There are select places in Kiev where the toys are replaced with real metal, and the blast of gunpowder.
Here in Ukraine, we cannot just own firearms. There is a strict category for people who might have access to firearms (besides police and armed forces), making shooting a gun an exotic activity. There are only few licensed places in Kiev where you can have the experience of shooting military grade weapons.
Strictly, under the supervision of former well-qualified military firearms instructors, you can practice shooting different types of classic Soviet weapons, including the legendary AK-47 and its modernized twin, AKM. Safety comes first. That is why the instructor will focus on safety requirements and how to handle each weapon appropriately.
The arsenal’s list includes many classics such as the exotic Dragunov sniper rifle, Kalashnikov LMG, and the Ukrainian made Z-10 rifle.
Besides Soviet guns and weapons from the former eastern camp, you will also find familiar guns like the classic American M-16 and M-4 carbine rifles.
Shotguns, pistols, and revolvers are also available to try, among them F-500 pump-action shotguns, a variety of Makarov pistols, CZ-75 Fort, Fort-21, Glock-17, small-caliber Margolin, and Taurus pistols and many others.
Flight is always an amazing source of adrenaline, so how about taking it to the extreme?

That is exactly what will you get by becoming a co-pilot on an aerobatic plane with one simple rule to follow:
Never sit inside an acrobatic plane with a full stomach. I avoided this mistake, and I really advise you to avoid it too!
Theses plane are smaller, lighter, and built for more maneuverability than the average aircraft. Many of them are used for the purposes of training or are built specifically for extreme air acrobatic shows (aerobatics).
Our Ukrainian pilots are known as some of the world’s best-trained pilots, and specialized acrobatic pilots are in a league of their own. To my surprise, I met many who spent more time behind an airplane controller than driving their own cars!
There is a variety of aerobatic planes in Kiev, the most common among them is the classic Soviet Yak-52 airplane. It can elevate up to 4000 m (~13,125 ft.) and reach a maximum speed of 285 km/h (~177 mph).
You will have to undergo basic instruction where you will meet your pilot and be informed about safety instructions. Then you will board your plane. If you want to, your pilot will give you the chance to take control of the plane for a while, just do not take it too far!
Did you hear about the zip line over the Dnieper River in Kiev?
The zip line works only during warmer times of the year. You can find the zip line at the very heart of Kiev, in Marinski Park near the Arch of Friendship, the landing spot is at Trukhanov Island. It is a 530 meters (~1739 ft.) journey over one of Europe’s largest and longest rivers.

You will be given a harness to wear to attach you to the main cable. For safety, you will also be given a helmet to wear which you can attach a GoPro camera (available for rent) to capture your flight over Dnieper.
You can also use your own phone (better with attached to selfie stick), but keep a good grip on it.
The adrenaline rush is amazing! Flying without wings, or engines attached, with the water’s blue surface adds more magic to the moment. The landing is smooth and you will come to complete stop before you reach the arrival tower on the island.
After landing, you can go back by crossing the pedestrian bridge that connects Trukhanov Island with the mainland. You do not need to rush back though. You can spend some time on the island. It is one Kiev’s top tourist attractions with its pleasant sandy beaches, entertaining cafes, restaurants, and beach clubs.
The zip line ride is cheap. Last time I checked, it was only $8 per person.
One final and important note: there seems to be some questionable issues with the zip line lately, as the provider of the original zip line over Dnieper claims there is confusion between them and some other entity. You can find more information about it here. My advice is to take the ride only if you are satisfied with the safety standards onsite.
Remember the tank chase scene from James Bond’s Goldeneye movie?
What if I tell you that you can drive this same type of tank yourself in Kiev?
Of course, do not expect to cruise through the city with your tank. There is a designated tank range for that purpose.

There are couple of places where you can rent a tank to drive around for a couple of hours in Kiev. All have multiple variations of real heavy armored military vehicles that you will have the chance to choose from. You can enjoy riding in a classic Soviet armored transporter BTR or a legitimate T-64 tank with the option to upgrade to the driver seat.
If you opt for a tank, the ride will give you a taste of the vehicle’s capability on different terrains: dirt, mud, forest, and water obstacles, too. Before you take over the wheel, the driver will give you a crash course on tank driving, only then can you finally take control of the 32 ton beast.
The tank can accelerate up to 60 km/h (~37 mph), while the BTR can reach 90 km/h (~55 mph) and swim with a maximum speed of 10 km/h (~6.2 mph). By the way, there is a special BTR vehicle built specifically to be able to swim to its destination and you can also try it.
So, which one to choose?
Well, the BTR is faster and lighter, designed to overcome all obstacles on any terrain, making for a fun ride and drive. But a tank is a tank! It’s larger, heavier, and more powerful… did I mention that it is a tank?! If you are torn between the two, take them both! Let me know and I will help you to get good deal on your experience!
The Chernobyl exclusion zone is one of the ultimate destinations for hardcore extreme adventure lovers. The reactor itself is still, and will continue to be, off-limits.

Since the Chernobyl incident, a 30 km (~19 mi) zone in all directions centered around the reactor was established, and tens of thousands of residents evacuated from different towns and villages within it. This area is called the exclusion zone.
This Kiev adventure will allow you access to the exclusion zone and enter the ghost city of Pripyat once home to 50,000 people, many of whom were the engineers and technicians of Chernobyl nuclear station. Pripyat is only 3 km (~1.8 mi) away from Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and 180 km (~112 mi) from Kiev. You will also get close to the power plant itself and its surroundings.
To reach Chernobyl from Kiev, you will need to register with a professional licensed provider who will drive with the rest of the group and facilitate the necessary permissions to access exclusion zone. If I am to recommend a specific tour or provider, it will be Chernobyl Tour.
The surreal post-apocalyptic cityscapes will leave an everlasting impression on you. It is hard to describe the overwhelming sensations that takeover you as you explore the streets of Pripyat, walk into abandoned houses, shops, and kindergartens. It is a tragic fate for what used to be a vibrant growing city and home to some of the country’s best scientist and engineers.
Many photographers take advantage of the unmatched panoramic scenes of the legendary ghost city and spend the day capturing spectacular one of a kind photos.
Regarding the cost, it is almost the same everywhere starting from $85 per person for group tours and may reach $500 for private tours.
This is how freedom feels like!
Using nothing but a thin piece of fabric and couple of belts attached to it, paragliding is the one of the simplest known approaches to flight. Although it might seem similar to skydiving, there is a clear difference between the two.

In paragliding you do fly, and can go higher or lower for hours, unlike parachute jumps, where you basically fall to the ground.
If you dare to leave the comfort and sense of safety of airplane cabins and decide to experience paragliding in Kiev, you will have the opportunity to feel like a bird!
It is a combination of adrenaline, freedom, and peace, in that order!
There are multiple variations of paragliders with the simplest consisting of a parachute like part, called the wing, and a harness attached to it.
There is a big paragliding community in Ukraine, with healthy presence of many hobbyist and professionals in Kiev, one of the well-known paragliding societies in Kiev is Kiev Paragliding Club. If you decide to go paragliding in Kiev, only a professional pilot can accompany you.
You will takeoff from Kiev countryside, not from inside the city itself. There are powered and unpowered paragliders, the former comes with an engine attached. Expect decent instruction by your instructors. He will explain to you the do and do nots of paragliding and what to expect. You will be given protective gear to wear and a harness which will be attached to your instructor and the wing.
The flight it is similar to skydiving with and professional skydiver. Each flight is 15-20 minutes on average. However, the professionals can fly for a couple of hours and cover hundreds of miles, literally!
So, if you are interested in a long flight, the possibility is there, after all it is an adventure!
According to one pilot, the average speed for paragliding is typically 20-40 km/h (~12-25 mph) and an unpowered paraglider can easily reach 75 km/h (~46.6 mph). Before your flight, ask for a GoPro rental to capture your experience, or use your own.
Paragliding in Kiev is the type of adventure that takes your adrenaline through the roof and then brings a wide smile to your face. The view is spectacular and relaxing, especially if opting for long flight over farmed fields, grasslands, rivers, and forests.
The best time for paragliding in Kiev is during summer and spring, in dry days with fair wind. The cost is affordable and ranges between $50 and $90 for a 15-20 minute flight with a professional paraglider pilot.
Like any weather dependent activity, always check and double check the weather forecast before you visit to Kiev to make sure that you can enjoy this experience. And if my assistance is required at any time to arrange a flight for you just let me know.
Unlocking the secrets of Kiev’s undergrounds is one of the most amazing adventures that anyone can experience. It is an adventure I have not experienced, but I am considering it!

I spoke with a local undergrounds enthusiast who described the tunnels world beneath Kiev surface as an underground labyrinth that seems like a maze of endless tunnels running under the city.
Your Kiev underground tour will take you through a network of tunnels, some of which were built during the time of the Russian empire and the Soviet era with earlier networks dating back to the 19th century. These used to be mining shafts at the time, busy with workers and miners. You can find some of their leftovers in the form of small tools and bowls.
The tunnels can get very narrow and wet, so wear something you don’t mind getting smudges on. Wear something you will not miss and if you didn’t pack anything you are willing to sacrifice, don’t worry, just swing by any secondhand clothes store and get a onetime outfit for less than $10.
Expect to encounter some bats, rats, and other small friendly creatures. And no, there are no mystical predators roaming the tunnels!
The average Kiev underground tour takes about 3 hours during which you can explore up to 3 km (~1.9 mi) of the undergrounds’ tunnels. The tours are organized is groups of 4 to 10 participants under the supervision of a professional guide. If you prefer a private tour, it is also possible.
Although many tour providers offer access to Kiev’s underground, only few do so while maintaining high quality of services and taking safety precautions seriously. Before proceeding with your subterranean journey, the tour provider should supply you with special gear that includes a flashlight, robe, boots, protective helmet, and gloves.
On average an underground group tour in Kiev costs $20-$30 per person. Private tours can cost up to $80-$100 per person.
Mysticism has always surrounded Kiev undergrounds. The legends of the secret Stalin’s Second World War tunnels to the ghost and spirits of the undergrounds. I do not know about the ghost, but the existence of secret tunnels and rooms from the Soviet era is a possibility. Who knows, maybe you will stumble upon them down there!
So, how about touring Kiev in a helicopter?
Exploring Kiev from a helicopter gives you a different look at the city and allows you to realize a childhood dream and experience that glamourous lifestyle. In Kiev, a helicopter is just a daily transport.

Depending on where you are staying, a helicopter might pick you up from the top of your hotel, take you around the city in a tour, then land at a party destination, the airfield, or bring you back home!
The ride can also be fast and extreme as the helicopter can accelerate to over 200 km/h (~124 mph) and perform a variety of sharp maneuvers.
Flying in a helicopter in Kiev is considerably affordable compared to other places and countries. The price range for a 15-20 minute helicopter ride in Kiev may cost you anything between $80-$150 per person.
This will be a lifetime experience and something to remember. So, why not?
You can experience flying over Kiev from inside a private plane cockpit and take the experience to the next level by taking over the controls and get your first flight lesson and fly a plane in the skies of Kiev.

There are several small airfields on the outskirts of Kiev with several types of small airplanes that you can choose from. You can hire a cab or an Uber to get to the airfield yourself or ask to be picked up from the city.
For safety issues, your pilot will insist on flying during clear weather. This makes for smoother flight and allows you to have better view of the city and countryside. You will fly above the city itself, Dnieper River, forest, fields, and also the Kiev Sea (Kiev reservoir).
The best part of the trip is when your pilot allows you to take over plane controls. You can try it yourself after a short introduction to the basics. The cost of renting a plane is less than a helicopter ride.
Depending on the size and type of the plane, you may expect to pay $150-$300 for a 90 minute flight. Since this experience is popular among my tourists, I became well acquainted with one of the best pilots in the city with access to large collection of airplanes and at a good price to guarantee the best value. Contact me for flight booking and details!
Flying over the city, rivers, and forests will provide you with delightful experience, and leave you with many happy memories.
Skydiving is one the most daring adventures that Kiev has to offer. It is simply amazing!

The adrenaline rush takes over you before making the jump, as you sit in the plane, while it is climbing to the required height for your jump, with waves of tension making your whole body vibrate, and you experience these final moments of hesitation before facing the plane’s open door, then you make your longest jump.
A popular place for Skydiving, and a favorite of mine, is Chayka. They are based in their own airfield, and even have and aerobatic team. You can just book a parachute jump or register for a full training program (if you can spare the time).
You can rent a skydiving outfit onsite for as little as $2-$3. Before the jump, you must go through training program to discuss safety, techniques, what to expect during the process, and what to do during skydiving.
There are two options for your first jump: either to make it with an instructor or solo.
Jumping for the first time with an instructor is always safer. You will be attached to the professional skydiving instructor with a harness. He will be controlling the fall and the parachute. You will make the jump from 3000 to 4000 m (~9842.5 to 13,123 ft.) high, your freefall will continue for up to 60 seconds before the instructor opens the parachute.
If you are planning on making your first jump solo, you can do so, however, expect more detailed instructions on the ground, with basic training that can take up to 3-4 hours sometimes. The jump itself will be 1000 m (~3280 ft.) high, the freefall will continue for couple of seconds only before the parachute opens, and start your slow landing.
Naturally, you would like to capture the moment, so you will be able to select from many options including a cameraman that will jump with you to film a full video, and even work on the montage to deliver a professional clip of your skydiving experience.
The cost can be as little as $30 depending on the height of the jump, with and instructor or not, filmed or not, and so on. Based on the previous factors and others, the cost of each jump may vary from $30 to $150.
There are couple of small skiing resorts in and around Kiev. All are great options for skiing and snowboarding lovers who can practice their favorite sport every weekend without the need to travel.

The skiing palace I prefer, and often go to during winter time, is Protasov Yar. It is Kiev’s beloved mini skiing resort and favorite destinations for entertainment and adventure for its residents and tourists alike. Located right inside Kiev, within walking distance from its city center, the resort is a testament to the unique mosaic city that Kiev is.
The skiing complex is situated on a hill with decent elevation and has four runs 150 – 500 m (~492 – 1640 ft.). Longer runs are meant for professionals and experienced skiers, while shorter runs are for beginners and first timers.
You can go to Protasov Yar anytime during the day or night. The place is more crowded during the afternoon, so better go there early before it gets too crowded, or you can opt for a nighttime skiing session.
Fun fact:
There is live streaming of the runs that you can view on the complex’s website, so you can take a better look and know what to expect beforehand.
Even if you have never skied before in your life, there are many instructors who will give you a one on one training session at small cost of around $20-$30 per hour. Full day lift passes cost around $3, and the price for renting full set of equipment is around $10-$12 for a full day.
The complex works during winter, however there are other activities that take place there during summer and warmer months like open-air movie nights and others that take advantage of the hills.
If you are in Kiev during winter, and would like to enjoy and outdoor activity, take my advice and put it on your list of things to do. Get out and ask for directions to Protasov Yar!
You cannot call yourself an adrenaline addict before you get baptized with iconic bungee jumping, and a loud scream!
You can find two ideal places for bungee jumping in Kiev, both over the Dnieper River.

Our pedestrian bridge connecting the Kiev’s left bank with Trukhanov Island is a great location for your jump. It is not too high to discourage you from jumping, but high enough to make your adrenaline pump!
The bridge is only 26 m (~85 ft.) high above river level, and the jump will cost you around $8-$10.
Another great spot for bungee jumping in Kiev is Hydropark, with its 43 m (~141 ft.) fixed platform making for more extreme experience. Expect to pay around $18-$20.
Weight and age limitation may apply; these vary from one provider to another. Usually jumpers should be 16 and older, weighing no less than 45 kg (~100 lb.), but no more than 125 kg (~275 lb.).
Bungee jumping is a thrilling experience within your grasp in Kiev. Just make sure to try it on a light stomach!
How can a city with no ocean or a sea have so much amazing water activities? Kiev has it its fair share of water adventures, thanks to its jewel-blue life stream: the Dnieper, the massive river passing through Kiev, and the source of the city’s prosperity.

Jet skiing is among the many water adventures of Kiev. I have experienced it myself. Jet skis are the coolest watercrafts ever invented, and riding one is always a pleasant experience.
Unlike riding a jet ski in the open sea, the Dnieper River in Kiev gives a unique jet skiing experience, with variety of areas to ride, river extensions, and small sections that are unreachable for average boats.
Regardless of whether you are a beginner or a pro, you can certainly enjoy a pleasant jet skiing experience.
Wearing a life-jacket is necessary. It will be part of your safety gear when renting a jet ski.
In case you are familiar with riding jet skis, expect nothing more than basic instruction before you start your ride. If it happened to be your first time, do not worry, an instructor will explain the basics, controls, technique, and take you through the process of your first ride.
You can book as short as a 5 minute ride or go for up to an hour. The prices in one place might be double in another, so shop around.
There are several places where you can rent a jet ski in Kiev. Trukhanov Island’s beach is my personal favorite of them all.
Five minutes will cost you anything from $12 to $25. An entire hour with instruction can reach $150. Do not rush and take an hour, just go and test drive of 5-10 minutes, and if you still want more, book the full hour of jet skiing on the Dnieper.
So, which one of these exciting activities would you like to experience when you visit Kiev?

]]>So, I decided to just say this:
Kyiv is the most underrated, overlooked capital in the world, when it comes to tourism!
It is a treasure for all tourists and travelers. Kyiv is a place where you can walk the streets admiring 1000 years of marvelous architecture, experience wild nightlife to the fullest, enjoy sandy river beaches, socialize and make new friends, and even drive a tank among other things to enjoy an adrenaline rush!
Many mega-cities around the globe claim to have it all. Rarely does that prove to be the case. I’m proud that my city, falls within this rare category.
I know you have a lot of questions about it, how to get here, where to stay in Kyiv, what can you do in the city, about Kyiv nightlife… So. let’s start with the first question:
The short answer is yes, it is safe for tourists!
Contrary to the bad 90’s actions movie made you think, the mafia is not roaming the streets in their long black leather coats, black shades, carrying AK-47 machine guns, robbing banks and shooting people randomly!
East Europe in general, and Kyiv in particular, are victims of negative stereotypes.
Just try mentioning your plans to fly to Ukraine to family and friends, who have never been here before, and they will be more than likely express worry and might try to discourage you from going on with your journey, and suggest you avoid this “dangerous” place!
The reality is that the capital of Ukraine is as safe as any other European capital.
Nothing testifies to that like the increasing number of tourists visiting Kyiv every day especially at its downtown, and other popular tourist attractions.
Of course, incidents and crimes do take place just like any other major city in Europe and the United States. Taking some normal caution should be enough.
One thing dominating the news, fueling doubts about the safety here, is the Ukrainian-Russian conflict.
Despite the situation in the eastern two regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, on the far east of Ukraine, no tanks are cruising the streets as the conflict is limited to a small area on the eastern border of Ukraine, about 700 km (~430 mi) from Kyiv.
The conflict zone is isolated with the extensive presence of various Ukrainian security units making the rest of the country safe to locals and visitors alike.

Yes!
There is not much difference between traveling to Ukraine alone versus Paris, New York, London, or Rome alone.
The same common-sense rules apply to solo travelers as well as to couples and groups of friends traveling together. However, if you are traveling alone to Kyiv, take note of my five simple safety rules:
Simply treat Kyiv the same way you would treat your city, but with some extra caution.
Select a good area to stay, preferably at the city center, and ignore questionable characters who approach you on the street with strange offers!
I am a professional and friendly tour guide here, in Kyiv. Why don’t you allow me to help you to plan your visit and keep it safe and enjoyable?
Needing a Visa to travel to Ukraine depends on the passport you are holding. To know if you need a Visa or not, please visit the Entry regime to Ukraine for foreign citizens on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
In general, citizens of the United States of America, Europe, the Persian Gulf, India, China, Australia, among others, enjoy Visa-free, online, or Visa on arrival entry.
However, the duration of stay is different for each category of entry and Visa type; for that, you should review the official Visa information on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.
If you find that you require a tourist Visa to visit Ukraine, then you should apply for it directly through the appropriate Ukrainian consular office in your country.
Acquiring tourist invitations can be helpful to ease the process. Try Googling tourist agencies offering this service.
If I can be of help, contact me and let me know!
Our currency here is the Ukrainian Hryvnia. Today, the exchange rate is 1 USD to 28 Hryvnia. However, it often changes. Check updated information displayed below;
You can cross the border with no more than the equivalent of 10,000 Euros in cash.
I do not recommend that you use this limit to the fullest; better keep the rest on your credit/debit card which are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, supermarkets, and shops. And if you need cash, simply use any ATM in the city.
Yes, it is very affordable for tourists. And I dare to say that the value you will get for your money in Kyiv is not even possible by any other capital on this planet.
Make no mistakes, Kyiv is a very fancy city. We, Ukrainians spare no luxury when it comes to clubs, bars, shopping malls, and entertainment.
Just experience the nightlife scene to get a hint of the glamourous city that Kyiv is.
Nevertheless, the costs of living, food, transport and even partying is among the lowest in Europe.
Kyiv was affordable before, however, the events of the revolution (2013-2014) had taken their toll on the Hryvnia (the local Ukrainian currency), and caused it to devalue three times in value.
Of course, prices followed and went up, but a 100 USD (or 100 Euro) can still go a long way.
A decent meal in a good restaurant with drinks and maybe some desert starts from $5 to $7 per person. A 10-15 minute Uber ride outside of rush hours tops $3 to $4.
Enjoy an entire evening drinking at a bar spending only $50!
Staying in a fancy one-room apartment at the very heart of the city can be $50-$80/night. Some museums are as cheap as 10 cents for entrance!
I know!
This is why spending a minute or two reading my article Kyiv Budget Guide will give you a better idea about budgeting and how to better manage your finances when visiting Kyiv.

Yes and no.
The vast majority of Ukrainians do not speak English. A lot of people do understand English, however, speaking tends to be challenging.
Unlike native English speaking countries (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and others), Ukraine is a post-soviet country in which the dominant language was Russian.
That is why you might struggle to find English speakers among mid-age and older people, while the younger generation is much savvier with English and other languages in general.
They may be a little hesitant out of shyness, but approaching people with a smile, using simple English words, and learning a few Ukrainian or Russian words will go a long way.
Regardless, the language won’t disturb your stay, entertainment, or food.
Ordering food at restaurants and cafés should be no problem as all of them have English menus and employ a couple of waiters who do speak English.
All decent hotels, including the ones I will recommend when you trust me to plan your visit to Kyiv, have English-speaking employees at the reception.
And if you need a good interrupter in Kyiv, just contact me!
Kyiv has two civilian airports that are open for international flights. Arriving at either of them is fine, Boryspil Airport and Zhuliany Airport.
The first is Boryspil International Airport; its international code is KBP.
This airport is the bigger and busier in Kyiv. It is 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Kyiv.
Transport options from Boryspil (besides taxi) include airport shuttle bus. It has two stops: Kharkivska metro station and the Kyiv central railway train station.
You can also take airport shuttle trains from Boryspil to the railway station.
It’s a good option if you are not planning to stay in Kyiv and need to proceed with your journey to another city.
My advice is to use Uber. It is reliable, safer, and cheaper than the average taxi.
The second airport is Kyiv International Airport (Zhuliany), easily differentiated with its international code IEV.
It’s more compact than the first and also the nearest airport to Kyiv as its located within the city limits. Zhuliany is only 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Kyiv’s center.
So, transport is not an issue with even the tram line being not far from the airport.
Getting a taxi would be better than the tram, but forget about taxis, order an Uber!
Just in case you don’t want to hustle, I can arrange for your pickup.

For you as a tourist, the best place to stay is around Kyiv’s city center, or an elite part of Podil historic district.
These are the best and safest areas in Kyiv, especially for foreigners.
I recommend the area around Arena City. It is a favorite among my tourists with many nightclubs, restaurants, and tourist attractions within walking distance from it.
There are three types of accommodations for tourists: hotels, apartments, and hostels.
Couchsurfing is not a wide practice here, so better stick to hostels if you are on a tight budget.
The last 5-10 years have been good for Kyiv’s hotel business. Both quantity and quality went up rapidly.
Today, there is a hotel in Kyiv for every taste and budget. Many luxury hotels have their spas, so you can take advantage of that while staying there.
In my opinion, Premier Palace, Aloft, and 11 mirrors will give the best value for your money.
Apartments are generally cheaper than hotels with an extra bounce of privacy. However, hotels are always safer.
Renting an apartment is not dangerous, on the contrary, they can be as safe, or even safer. It all depends on selecting the right area and the right apartment.
There are many websites and apps like Airbnb, offering hundreds of options all around the city. Nevertheless, they don’t guarantee to get the best possible option.
In case you prefer to rent an apartment, but hesitant about doing it online, you can trust my expertise and contact me to assist you with your choice.
I went through the pros and cons of a well-detailed article about How to find good accommodation for tourists in Kyiv; you will find many interesting things inside. I highly recommend reading it!

Kyiv is a modern, vibrant European megapolis with a rich history.
The city’s attractions are limitless, and you can spend an entire month in it, having every meal in a new restaurant/café without visiting any restaurant twice, partying in a new place every day, exploring and enjoying a new tourist attraction every time.
I am discovering new things to do and places to visit every day!
So let me share my opinion of the top things to do in Kyiv:
Riding the never-ending escalators of Arsenalna metro station is something every tourist in Kyiv should experience.
The metro system was designed and constructed during the Soviet era. The Ukrainian capital desperately needed this addition to its transport network.
Taking into consideration Kyiv’s geology and geography, engineers were forced to go deep under building the tunnels. That resulted in Arsenalna, the deepest metro station in the world.
Arsenalna is 105.5 meters or 346 feet deep below the surface. To visualize it, the Statue of Liberty to the edge of the torch is 93 meters or 305 feet, and Big Ben is 96 meters or 315 feet.
The distance is so long, it takes two-stage mega escalators to connect the entrance with the train platform.
The journey from the entrance until you board the underground train takes 5-6 minutes on average.

Kyiv is famous for its beautiful historic golden-domed churches and cathedrals.
The architecture and design of these sites were influenced by Byzantine architecture. They have been and still are major landmarks of Orthodox Christianity.
Among them are Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv Monastery of the Caves), both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which were built around 900 years ago.
The 1000-year-old Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is the oldest major orthodox cathedral in Ukraine, and one of the holiest sites in Eastern Europe.
Fun fact, the cathedral is illustrated on the two Hryvnia bill!
Besides the cathedral, the complex also includes Yaroslav tomb (Sarcophagus of Yaroslav the Wise) and the spectacular southern entrance tower.
If you are a fan of architecture, touring Pecherska Lavra will be an exciting experience. It is a large complex, with over 100 monks residing inside.
The complex is built on a system of narrow tunnels connecting underground caves that contain chapels and living quarters. You will get a chance to explore some of them during your tour.
St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery is another spectacular site deserving of your attention.
The monastery is a living example of resurrection and deep routed orthodoxy in Ukraine.
It underwent painful demolition by the Soviet regime between 1934-1936, then reconstructed and rebuilt from the ground up using many authentic parts of the historic monument, saved during demolition.
St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery opened its doors again in 1999 in an independent Ukraine. Also worth your attention when you visit Kyiv.

Other historic churches I suggest you also visit St Volodymyr’s Cathedral and St Andrew’s Church. Both are among the city’s top tourist attractions and are an illustration of Kyiv, and Eastern European art and architecture.

It seems that many major projects that start as controversial transform into monumental landmarks.
Motherland Monument in Kyiv is one of the. It is one of 10 tallest statues in the world (7th according to some sources), and an internationally recognized symbol of Ukraine.
The monument was built out of steel and designed to stand tall for more than 150 years.
With its base, Motherland is 102 meters or 335 feet tall. Meaning it is taller than the iconic Statue of Liberty in New York which is 93 meters or 305 feet.
There are observation decks at 36 meters (118 feet) and 91 meters (298 feet) height.
The statue itself is part of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.
The massive memorial complex occupies over 27 acres, it also includes an exhibition of various Soviet area weapons and equipment, and I am not talking about guns and pistols, but tanks, heavy artillery, armored boats, fighter jets, attack helicopters, and even a mobile strategic missile unit for nuclear weaponry!

Don’t worry though, it is harmless and without any real warheads inside!
The complex itself is a masterpiece testament to Soviet-era art and architecture.
Before you reach Motherland Monument, you will pass through a tunnel.
There are various art exhibitions all around, the most exemplary ones are The Flame of Glory, Battle of the Dnieper Monument, and the breathtaking war panorama on the walls of the tunnel midway between the main entrance and Motherland Monument.
If history is your horse, you can easily spend half your day at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.
Sounds interesting? Let me know to include it to your tour then!
Many of my tourists express their surprise when I introduce them to the beach life in Kyiv.
My city is located on the east and west banks of the Dnieper, one of Europe’s largest rivers.
The river beaches are wonderful, ideal for tanning, and relaxing after a long day of work.
Trukhanov Island is a great example of Kyiv beach life. You can meet people and socialize, rent a kayak, jet ski, or even go water skiing!
There are many beach nightclubs all around Kyiv, so why not stay after dark and join the party?

If you are looking for an adventure, you will find many!
There are limitless sources to make your adrenaline rush here. Some of them are exclusive to Kyiv and Ukraine.
The most famous among them is exploring the ghost town of Chernobyl. Surely, the name sounds familiar!
How about flying a plane?
Even better, jumping off one!
You can also ride a tank, and drive it after short instruction.
Extreme tourism is big here. I think we like it so much, that we unintentionally perfected it!
I wrote a detailed article about adventure tours in Kyiv, which I regularly update with new information.
I recommend you read it first for better orientation before requesting a tour so we can better plan your visit to Kyiv.

A lot!
You can start the evening at one of Kyiv’s best bars, or pre-party spots, then go clubbing, meet new people, and continue partying if you still have the energy as the city has many amazing after party clubs.
Kyiv nightlife is an amazing beast that tourists find themselves tempted to try to tame. It has developed to become a major industry with various outlets, attracting tourists from all around the world.
The nightlife scene in Kyiv has it all: a romantic atmosphere, stunning clubs, buzzing bars, and friendly partygoers!
Nightclubs dominate the nightlife and are its main component. Clubs here love to organize lavish themed parties and various events.
There are many good nightclubs in Kyiv ranging from elite glamourous to underground.
Bars are not a place to get hammered, but a vibrant cultural addition to the nights of Kyiv. Spending an evening in a bar can be for the drinks, spending time with friends, while enjoying live music performances.
They can also be pre-party and after-party spot. Many bars in Kyiv organize live DJ music performances on weekends.
Many bars can be described as mini clubs themselves.
I have heard it repeatedly from tourists who travel from the States, Europe, India, Australia, and others: Kyiv nightlife is amazing!
To summarize: the night scene is exciting, glamourous, wild, safe, and affordable.
Nightlife is my most requested tour. If you are a party fan, you will find my Kyiv Nightlife Guide very useful.

When it comes to food, my city has too much to offer for you to be punishing yourself with McDonald’s and KFC!
I always try to place my tourists in Kyiv downtown. This gives them the bonus of being in short walking distance from my favorite restaurant Koya.
It’s located within Arena City complex that also hosts a large number of the best food places like The Burger, where you can enjoy a specialty burger as the name hints, or get something light to eat and socialize as in Casual Food.
If you happen to be in a hurry, just grab a fast meal at Noodle Doodle.
When it comes to class, try Coin, which is another favorite of mine and my tourists. There you are guaranteed to enjoy every meal.
If you are looking for an outstanding dining experience, going on a date, or simply want to treat yourself, look no further than Veranda. It is an elite restaurant, with an outstanding menu, great service, and a warm atmosphere.
In many aspects, Ukraine is a melting pot for cultures. Our food and restaurant scene is one clear reflection of that.
There is one street at the heart of Kyiv where you can find within 200 meters walking distance restaurants specializing in Ukrainian, Japanese, Iranian, Vietnamese, and Italian cuisine! And a Mc Donald’s, too!
I hope you are better informed now about Kyiv than before. If there are any questions you have, or want to request a private tour, feel free to contact me.

Without a doubt, Kiev is a treasure for tourists, as it offers beautiful cityscapes, restaurants, historical and architectural monuments. However, its main attraction is the Kiev nightlife, and it is attracting millions of tourists each year to the city.
Nightlife in Kiev is not a “one size fits all”, but a mixture of many tastes.
There are wide selections for nightlife events, from glamourous to more frugal Kiev night clubs, disco to beach clubs and even after party clubs. Wow! They go on until early in the morning to the next day’s afternoon.
Despite the cooler winter climate in Kiev, this non-stop, magnificent party capital can offer blood warming evenings and entertainment thanks to wide range of discos, night clubs and bars of all kinds and themes.
Ukrainians are very friendly, love to have fun and party hard until the morning. The last is a tradition brightly reflected by the never-ending, fantastic parties of Kiev Nightlife.

You can make new friends while partying and enjoying Kiev nightlife. Clubs and bars are great place to meet beautiful, sexy Ukrainian women.
Elegant, glamourous, and stylishly dressed, the friendly ladies of Kiev are pleasant company. Remember to keep it classy and approach with friendly smile.
Kiev loves to party, and Arena City is a great place to start.
Due to its central location just next to the historic Bessarabska Square, Arena City Kiev is one of the most visited places by tourists.
It is the largest entertainment complex in Kiev and is the honorary capital of fun, party and Kiev nightlife.
Inside Arena City, there are some of the most famous Kiev night clubs, bars, restaurants, shops, and strip clubs.
I recommend you come to Arena City early in the day, experience the best food outlets, have dinner, and then some fun in a club or where ever you like to hang around overnight, party, and dance!

Located in Arena City, SkyBar Club is an adult entertainment complex in Kiev.
SkyBar is one of the most famous night clubs in Kiev. It has over ten years being known as the best Nightlife party spot in the city.
Staying on top of Kiev nightlife outlets is never easy. That is why the club underwent reconstruction for a few months, but has already opened its doors, as spectacular as ever, hosting customers and entertaining them with fresh collection of global entertainment ideas.
SkyBar is not just a night club with a dance floor. It also has a restaurant, fancy lounge, and a beautiful terrace overlooking the city center.
In addition to hosting events with international DJs, karaoke nights are also organized at SkyBar during the week.
There is a tight dress code enforced at the entrance, so better dress up!

CHI works as night club only twice a week (Friday and Saturday), for the rest of the week it’s open as a restaurant.
Within a few months, CHI managed to establish itself as a prime Kiev nightlife destination. It became known as the fancy VIP nightclub and restaurant in Kiev, mostly attracting wealthy clients.
Prices are on the high side compared to other night clubs in Kiev. Nevertheless, it’s always busy on weekends, and getting inside might be very, very difficult!
The bar at CHI serves great cocktails, and the music played in the club is enjoyable. Most often the music is played by famous international DJs, and goes back and forth between house and trance music.
Dress code is formal at CHI!
Even if you reserve a table and make a deposit, it doesn’t mean that you will pass dress code if you chose not to dress up. So, a word of advice: suit up!
CHI is THE hook up place, as the ladies there stylish and glamorous, and quite sophisticated.
As experienced tour guide in Kiev, I would highly recommend you go there. And as your nightlife tour guide, your chances of enjoying good evening at CHI will octuple!

Not far from the Dynamo Stadium, D.Fleur is one of the most famous night clubs in Kiev.
Interior design and decoration are an elegant feast for the eyes, spread out over three floors.
The ground floor is a restaurant and lounge bar area, where you can have a drink, initiate and enjoy some conversation.
If you feel like dancing afterward, just go up to the next floor where the main dance floor is located. There is a balcony on the upper level with a good view of the dance floor.
The music played at D.Fleur is not exclusive to a genre or style. Usually recent popular songs are played. Special party events are also organized from time to time.
Prices are between mid-range to expensive compared to the average pricing policy of Kiev night clubs.
There is an X factor making this club trendy among locals and especially popular with women. It is easy to find yourself dancing in the midst of beautiful women!
Dress code is less formal. Just the standard dress code.
So, what do you think?
Should I include this when I plan your Kiev nightlife tour for you?

Not far from Kiev central train station, the Caribbean is a known nightlife destination, and one of the oldest night clubs in Kiev.
As the name suggests, the club plays mainly Latin music, with trance and RnB music also played depending on the night’s program.
Caribbean Club’s diverse and vibrant atmosphere attracts both locals and tourists. Special shows including live music and exotic dancers are quite common.
Maintaining this atmosphere helped maintain the club’s popularity, especially with women between 25-35 years, making it a great meet-up place.
Prices for table reservations and drinks are reasonable.
ID checks as well as the dress code are relaxed. So, feel free to walk-in with confidence.

Located at the heart of Kiev and gaining more popularity every day.
Heaven Club is well known not only as a night club, but also sensational after party club where partygoers can continue partying through the night until the next day.
The club is often full around 3:00 am and on some occasions can remain open until noon!
When other Kiev night clubs close, the party moves to Heaven Club. Why not follow it?
ID check is there to keep the troublemakers away, and dress code is relaxed.

Forsage’s youthful vibe makes it popular among university students and youth in Kiev. The average age of the goers is something between 18-24 years.
Friday and Saturday are the best time to join the party.
Some tourists find Forsage Club amusing and tend to pay it more than one visit.
The club occupies three floors, each of which plays a different type of music.
Prices are low. Reserving a table with a minimum deposit for drinks will cost up to $30.
Forsage’s advantage is its own disadvantage. It is a student-oriented club and comes with all the issues and difficulties associated that.

Not far from Kiev central train station, is the elegant Indigo night club.
The complex consists of restaurant, karaoke, lounge bar and a dance floor.
Morning to afternoon the club operates as a restaurant, and then shifts to work as a bar. After 10:00 pm the night club is up and running.
Indigo enjoys a refined clientele that prefer to party on weekend (Friday and Sunday).
If I am to plan your nightlife tour in Kiev, I will first suggest to go on the weekend.
ID check is somewhat relaxed, with an average dress code.

Famous for its daily parties, with quality music and skillful DJs, right at the heart of Kiev in Arena City.
Famous Club is a trendy night club, and an excellent choice for nightlife party lovers. Partying at Famous means energizing music, good drinks, fun karaoke and fine hookah.
This club is a real deal party and nightlife powerhouse. For most of the week it works as lounge bar with the real fun taking place every weekend with themed parties, live music, exotic dancers and dance shows.

Located not far from two Kiev nightlife icons, CHI and D.Fleur, Dali Park is one of ‘Kiev’s top night clubs. It is known for organizing world class concerts and club events, with local and international participants from all around the world.
Kiev partygoers who prefer Dali Park night club include Ukrainian celebrities, many VIPs and some of the most attractive women in Kiev.
Prices are a little bit on the high side but totally worth it.
Dali Park is a seasonal night club and works exclusively during the summer. So if you are planning to visit Kiev during the summer time, just let me know and I will make sure to include it in your nightlife tour.

Thanks to its geographic location on the banks of Dnieper, Europe’s fourth longest river, Kiev enjoys long beautiful river beaches that became the home for a variety of entertaining beach clubs.
These clubs are seasonal. They start working during spring, end early autumn, and are considered a unique interesting part of Kiev nightlife.
The top summer beach clubs that I always recommend to my guests are:
It is located on a beautiful part of the Dnieper riverbanks with a white sand beach overlooking Kiev City Park, not far from nude beach.
At night, Bora Bora is a buzzing open-air night club, where you can have fun and enjoy the best beach party.

Daily go-go dance performances, live DJ music, competitions, themed events, competitions, shows, great food menu, amazing cocktails, tempting swimming pools and all around sexy party atmosphere. This is City Beach Club in a nutshell.
The club occupies the roof of Ocean Plaza shopping and entertainment complex in Kiev, making for spectacular views.
The average age of City Beach Club clientele is between 20 to 35 years.
The club is basically built around two large swimming pools with a bar, restaurant zone, many tanning ledge pool chairs, dance floor, and unlimited possibilities to flirt and make new friends.

Olmeca is an exclusive VIP beach club. Music, style and themes vary and it is known for organizing fabulous private events during summer.
Located on the beach of Dnieper river, Olmeca Beach (Olmeca Plage) is well reputed luxury beach club in Kiev. It has its own river beach and separate large swimming pool and volleyball play areas.
Olmeca Beach is not a permanent Kiev nightlife entertainment complex. Administration tends to take the decision of operating at night during the summer at the beginning of each season.
Contact me in advance. I will let you know if we should include Olmeca or not when we plan your tour together.

Located within the famous Arena City Kiev, The Bar is one the best bars – if not the best – in Kiev.
It consists of two sections, smoking and non-smoking. The former enjoys a small dance floor with life DJ stand, where life DJs often paly RnB, Pop and club music, making for pleasant atmosphere.
Add to it dimmed lights, the smoking section is like a mini night club, making it more fun for smokers!
The Bar deserves the “The” before its name as it is known for serving quality drinks and cocktails, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. That’s why starting your Kiev nightlife journey from The Bar would be a great idea.
The female clientele age range is 18-30 years, mainly local Ukrainian women. As for males, the vast majority are foreigners, with some local presence.
Let me know if you feel like starting your nightlife tour in Kiev at The Bar.

Alchemist Bar is located at the center of Kiev in an old looking building with not much to tell that a bar is anywhere around.
The bar itself occupies part of the building’s basement. You can enjoy the drinks, but no smoking is allowed inside.
Live music and DJs often play at Alchemist Bar making it cool to spend some time there.
Due to its location, this bar is very busy every day. So, if you prefer a table to sitting at the bar, you will need to make a table reservation in advance. But, don’t worry about it. If I plan your nightlife tour in Kiev, I will take care of this part.

This Café/bar is located right at Kiev’s center. It has Middle Eastern interior design and decorations making for warm atmosphere.
Touch Café serves as a great pre-party establishment. It is a good place to start your night adventure in Kiev.
Touch has decent bar and food menus. You can also enjoy smoking hookah there and there is a section for smokers.
Live DJ music plays from 10:00 pm. It is wise to reserve a table in advance if you plan to go there on weekend evening.
Prices are on the high side, when compared to the average café/bar in Kiev. However, quality and cost are well balanced. Rest assured you’ll enjoy your drink, meal and time there in Touch Café.

Located not far from Maidan square, Buddha Bar is one of Kiev’s favorite bars among both locals and tourists.
Buddha is not only a bar but also a restaurant. The first floor is a restaurant with main mainly Asian cuisine while the lounge bar and dance floor occupy the second floor.
Entertainment peaks on the weekends with go-go dancers dominating the dance floor as part of the weekly program.

Known as the perfect spot for hookah lovers, Par Bar is a modern loft with high ceilings, large windows, and soft, comfortable furniture.
Using muffled lights, pleasant music, and rich wall drawings, the owners aimed to replicate a warm cozy feeling, and they succeeded!
You can pass your time while enjoying hookah and a good drink or cocktail.

An authentic hookah bar in Kiev gained attention of vast clientele with a bold claim of serving up to 700 different flavors of hookah tobacco.
Hookah is not the only thing served at GODZ: fresh drinks, exclusive cocktails and decent food menu add to the smoky experience!
